Data source definitions

A data source is an object that represents a repository of data, such as an email archive, a fileshare, or a filing cabinet. Tour the tabs that are available in the data source module and understand the configurable attributes of data sources.

In Map > Data Sources, the following tabs are available:

Catalog: Contains a list of the data sources to which you have access.
Categories: Lets you define labels that you can use to categorize your data sources.
Types: Lets you identify the geographic and management attributes of a data source, including street address, state, building number, contact name, and so on.
Catalog management: Lists the data sources modifications that are pending approval.
Data governance metrics: Provides an overview of the legal and regulatory obligations associated with your data sources.
Applications: Provides information about all of the data source applications that were identified to IBM® Atlas Policy Suite, and enables you to add new applications, and edit or remove existing applications.
Servers: Provides information about all of the data source servers that were identified to IBM Atlas Policy Suite, and enables you to add new servers, and edit or remove existing servers.

Catalog of active data sources
Navigating to Map > Data Sources displays the Data Source Catalog page, which lists all of the active data sources in your enterprise.
Data source details
The Data Source Details page provides detailed information about a data source.
Considerations for defining a data source
Consider the following information when defining a new data source.
Data source categories
The Map > Data Sources > Categories page lists the data source categories that are defined in your system. A category, which includes a name and description, is simply a way to group or classify your data sources in a manner that is meaningful to your organization. You can create and use categories however you like.
Data source types
The Map > Data Sources > Types module lists the Data Source Types that have been defined in your system.
Catalog management
The Catalog Management tab contains the following two subtabs: Change Requests and Templates.
Data governance metrics
The graphs and tables on the Data Governance Metrics page depict the number of data sources that have the least-to-greatest legal and regulatory obligations. These tools help IT organizations defensibly dispose of data, link legal obligations to information assets, and reduce the cost and burden of eDiscovery.
Applications
The Applications tab on the Data Source Catalog page lists all of the deployed data source applications in your enterprise. It also provides details for each application, such as the criticality of the application to the business, the application vendor, licensing information, and so on.
Servers
The Servers tab on the Data Source Catalog page lists all of the servers that are mapped to data sources. It also provides details for each server, which can be a database server, file server, or other type of server.
