Sharing Permissions
This article describes the various permissions in the AoC Files app. Using the Files app, workspace members share folders with others. The member who shares grants specific permissions to the person they share with. These permissions govern how the person shared with can act upon the content in the folder.
Your ability to share folders in your workspace depends upon:
- The settings configured for your workspace and organization.
- The permissions granted to you for a specific folder.
For a change in permissions or settings, contact your Aspera on Cloud administrator or the person who shared the content with you.
Sharing Permissions
See also "Content Permissions" below and the topics available in Sharing folders.
When you share a folder, you grant your recipient one or more specific permissions to it (for a list, see "Content Permissions" below). The permissions you can grant to your recipient for that shared folder depend on the permissions you have to the folder: you can grant the same permissions you have, or fewer; but you cannot grant permissions you do not have.
For example, if you have Browse, Preview, and Download permissions to a folder, you can grant all three of those permissions, or any two, or any one of those permissions, but you cannot grant Upload files or Delete permission.
- You can always share any folder in your Files app with fellow workspace members, including groups that are workspace members. To share this way, right-click the folder row and select Share.
- If enabled for members of your workspace, you can also share any folder in your Files app with AoC users outside your workspace and with people who do not have an AoC account at all.
Only you change the permission level for people you shared with (unless you are an admin that used the admin sharing procedure).
For details and strategies, see Sharing folders. To share as an administrator, see Share a node folder with a workspace.
Revoking Shared Permissions ("Unsharing" Content)
This applies to users of the Files app.
Only you can revoke shared access for the people you shared with.
Changing Content Permissions
Only you change the permission level for people you shared with. You can grant any or all of the permissions that you have to the folder, but you cannot grant permissions that you do not have.
Uploading Content in the Files app
-
You can upload content to any folder to which you have Edit or Upload Files permission.
-
You automatically have Edit permission to content you have placed (either by uploading or by moving from a package) into the Files application.
- By default you can upload to the Home folder area of your Files app. However, the admin can restrict that ability.
For more information on uploading, see Upload files and folders to the Files app.
Content Permissions
You have a specific permission or access level for each file or folder in your Files app. Check your permission to a given folder by right-clicking and selecting Info.
There are four preset or composite permissions and seven custom permissions for content in your Files app:
- Preset or Composite permissions:
-
Edit (also called Can Edit)
This is the highest level of permission and gives a user full control over the item; it contains all other permissions.
-
View (also called Download Only)
Includes Browse, Download, and Preview permissions.
-
Upload
Includes Create/Upload folders and Upload files
-
Preview
Includes Browse and Preview
-
- Custom permissions (content must reside on a transfer server with node software at version 3.7.4
or higher; see the "Package Information" section of the IBM Aspera High-Speed Transfer Service Release
Notes for specific build numbers for your platform):
-
Create/Upload folders
Create or upload an empty folder; to upload folders containing files, enable this permission along with Upload files.
-
Rename
Rename files and folders.
-
Upload files
Upload files and folders; to upload folders containing files, enable this permission along with Create/Upload folders permission -- or use Upload composite permission. See Delete below for uploading a file with the same name as an existing file (overwrite or replace). You need Upload permission to a folder to move or copy content to it.
-
Download
Download the folder or file in the folder.
-
Preview
Preview movie files in the folder. Thumbnail previews of supported image tiles are always available.
-
Browse
Browse folder content; if this setting is not enabled, you can see the folder but cannot view folder contents.
-
Delete
Delete or overwrite folder contents.
-
Internal and other permissions
An administrator or workspace manager may see a shared item identified as having an "Internal" or "Other" permission. This identification can indicate a number of different scenarios, as follows:
- Internal permission: workspace folder
This permission was created by the system to display and track shared folders in Aspera on Cloud.
- Internal permission: application
This permission was created by the system for internal purposes.
- Other permission: node or other app
This permission was created by an admin on an attached node, by an API user, or by a user of another app like Aspera Drive. Use caution and investigate carefully before deleting these permissions.
