What is the Packages app?

The Aspera on Cloud Packages app allows users in a workspace to send, receive, and request files and folders. Workspace members can also send, receive, and request files and folders from people outside the workspace according to permissions configured by the org admin or workspace manager. Administrators can configure shared inboxes in a workspace to facilitate specific collaboration workflows.

Send, receive, and request files and folders

The Packages app allows users to exchange copies of files and folders using an email-like workflow. Users can select files and folders from any storage, mount, or desktop accessible through Aspera on Cloud. The Packages app collects these items into a digital package. Users can address recipients allowed by administrative configuration, include a message to recipients, and enable various settings (for example, password protection, expiration policies, and notifications) per admin configuration, and send the content -- all from a single interface. Aspera on Cloud sends the package using IBM Aspera's high-speed transfer technology.

Packages app users can also send a submission link, requesting another user to send a digital package. Packages app users can send such file requests to individuals or groups as allowed by administrative configuration.

Packages app users in a workspace have an inbox to store packages sent to them, and folders for Packages they've sent, for draft packages, for archived, deleted, and expired packages. See articles in the User Guide for procedures to send, download, recall, and manage packages.

Depending on workspace configuration, Packages app users may exchange files using one or more shared inboxes.

Packages app in the organization and in the workspace

The Packages app is enabled for your organization by default. You can disable it for the entire org if no workspaces need to send digital packages.

If enabled for your organization, you can enable or disable the Packages app in each workspace. When you enable the Packages app for a given workspace, all members of that workspace can access and use Packages. When you add a new member to the workspace, that person automatically gains access to the Packages app in that workspace.

You configure the Packages app at the global level. Global settings are inherited by the Packages app in each workspace where it is enabled. An admin or a workspace manager can customize inherited settings at each workspace. For details, see Accelerate Packages app setup through inheritable settings.

When you add a new member the workspace, that person automatically gains access to the Packages app in that workspace. They can begin using the Packages app according to the configurations set by the admin for that workspace.

Save from the Packages app to the Files app

Packages app users can save content they receive in a package directly to their Files app (assuming they are member of both apps in the same workspace).

Send packages directly from the Files app

Packages app users can send digital packages directly from the Files app (assuming they are member of both apps in the same workspace). This means users don't have to download content from Files, switch to the Packages app, then create a digital package and send. Rather, they can right-click an item in their Files app and select Send via Packages to open the Send files form.
