Sending vs. Sharing: Key Differences

Sending files and folders using the Packages app and sharing folders in your Files app both initiate a FASP transfer. However, note these important distinctions between sending content and sharing content using Aspera on Cloud.

Sending Content using the Packages app

Send others a copy of your source material using the Packages app. Once you send the copy, changes you make to the source material do not affect the copy you send. Changes your recipients make to the copy you send do not affect your source material.

Use the Send Files form in your Packages app to create a digital package containing files and folders that are on your desktop, on a remote source, in any of your packages, or in your Files app. When you send that digital package, Aspera on Cloud initiates a transfer to deliver the package to the recipients you listed in the To: field of the form.

When you send content, Aspera on Cloud creates a copy of the source content, wherever that may reside, and delivers it to your recipient. Once you send content, you cannot modify the copy you sent. After you send the copy, changes you make to the source content do not affect the copy. Similarly, any change the recipient makes to content you've sent does not change the source content.

Membership in an Aspera on Cloud workspace allows you to send content to any member of that specific workspace. You may also have membership in a shared inbox in your workspace; if you do, you may be able to send to members of that shared inbox. And if your Aspera on Cloud administrator has enabled this capability for users in your workspace, you can send content to users in other workspaces and to people without an Aspera on Cloud account.

See Sending Files and Folders for details and procedures.

Sharing Content using the Files app

Share your source material with others using the Files app. Shared content is 'live', in that those with access can upload, download, or overwrite your source materials, according to the permissions you give them.

To share content, it must reside in a folder in your Files app. There are several ways by which folders can appear in your Files app:

  • With proper permissions, you can upload content into your Files app from a local or remote source.
  • You can move files and folders into your Files app from packages you've received in your Packages app.
  • You may also have content in your Files app that the administrator or other users have shared with you.

Sharing a folder does not create a separate copy. Rather, when you share content with someone, you give them access to the exact same materials you have access to. If they make changes to content you've shared, that content is changed at the source, and everyone with shared access to that content sees the same changes.

Membership in a workspace allows you to share content with any member of that workspace. If your Aspera on Cloud administrator has enabled this capability for users in your workspace, you can share content with users in other workspaces and with people who do not have an Aspera on Cloud account.

Note: You cannot share individual files. To share files, place them in a folder and share the folder.

See Sharing Folders for details and procedures.

Assigning Permission to Shared Content

When you share a folder, you assign permissions to that folder for each user with whom you share it. You can assign, at most, only the permissions that you yourself have to the folder; you can also share a folder and grant fewer permissions than you have to it.

For example, if you have 'Browse,' 'Preview,' and 'Delete' permissions to Folder A, you can share Folder A with User 1, giving User 1 the same 'Browse,' 'Preview,' and 'Delete' permissions that you have to Folder A; you can also share the same Folder A with User 2, giving User 2 only 'Browse' permission to Folder A.

Note: When you send files and folders, you do not assign permissions; each recipient has full permission to the content you send.
