Cloudability Rightsizing Recommendations
Cloudability rightsizing recommendations empower you to harness valuable insights for cloud cost optimization and informed decision-making. You can access your rightsizing recommendations in two ways:
- Historical Reporting: This option allows you to track your rightsizing recommendations’ evolution over time.
- Latest Data: This option allows you to access the most recent rightsizing recommendations available.
Note:
The data for the previous 13 months has not been retroactively filled as of January. Hence, it will gradually accumulate throughout the year. Moreover, reports containing AWS EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) data now include EC2 ASG savings data. Such data is not displayed in Cloudability dashboards.
How to Use Historical Reporting
- Create a new visualization or edit an existing one.
- In the Data Source drop-down, select Cloudability Rightsizing.
- Add your desired dimensions and metrics.
- In the Date Range section, select your desired time period (e.g., This Year-to-date).
How to Use Latest Data
- Create a new visualization or edit an existing one.
- In the Data Source drop-down, select Cloudability Rightsizing.
- Add your desired dimensions and metrics.
- In the Date Range section, select Latest Data Available. When you hover over the information icon, a tooltip will pop up, providing the message: “This will show your most recently available data. Not including this can lead to missing or incomplete data.”
Key Benefits
- Showcase your current and aggregated actionable rightsizing recommendations for a comprehensive analysis. Seamlessly transition to the Rightsizing page in Cloudability or collaborate with your DevOps teams to delve into detailed statistics and access additional rightsizing options, empowering you to take prompt and informed actions.
- Historical reporting on your rightsizing recommendations enables data-driven decisions by presenting a comprehensive view of how your optimization opportunities have evolved over time. This information is invaluable for identifying trends, understanding past optimization, and making well-informed choices for the future.
- By analyzing historical rightsizing recommendations, you can identify inefficiencies and opportunities to reduce costs. This helps you pinpoint over-provisioned resources, allocate them more efficiently, and ultimately cut down on unnecessary expenses.
Key Use Cases
- Surface existing rightsizing opportunities and potential cost savings in reports, enhancing visibility for executives and stakeholders. Additionally, you can filter and drill into the data to analyze specific dimensions, such as by Team, Resource ID, Resource Family, Region, and more.
- Ensure that previous rightsizing recommendations have been effective over time. Evaluate whether resources that were resized are still optimized or require further adjustments.
- Track how your rightsizing recommendations have evolved over time and identify areas where cost optimization efforts have yielded positive results.
- Understand missed opportunities and their financial impact (the cost of inaction).
- Optimize resource selection for periodic peak seasonality.
- Demonstrate progress in addressing underutilized cloud resources. If, for instance, a month ago, you had $10,000 worth of rightsizing opportunities and can now display a downward trend to $5,000, this serves as a theoretical demonstration of your efforts to rectify findings and reduce the under-utilization of cloud resources.

Savings Percentage (On-Demand) | Percent savings of the top recommendation for a resource using On-Demand pricing |
Additional Details
- Recommendations: Apptio BI displays only the top recommendations for each resource that Cloudability provides recommendations for, which are based on the most recent 10 days of utilization data. For a comprehensive analysis of additional recommendations, refer to the Rightsizing page.
- Historical insights: The data presented every day can vary because it relies on resources available in the past 10 days. It’s essentially like a “sliding window.” Currently, we only retain the most recent value for each month. We are not calculating an average or considering all resources; we are simply focusing on the most recent data.
- Data retention: Data is retained for 13 months, allowing you to view and analyze data over a 13-month period.
- Granularity: Data is available in monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and yearly granularity.
- Data freshness: There is a delay in data freshness between Rightsizing data in Cloudability and Apptio BI. Data will only appear in Apptio BI once recommendations for all services (e.g., EBS, EC2, S3) within an organization have been fully processed and the time for the Data Importer to pull in the data to Compute (i.e., Snowflake). The length of this delay depends on the number of resources associated with each service and can vary from one to 12 hours.
- Reprocessed Data: Data reprocessing does not alter historical rightsizing data in Apptio BI.
