Creating a IBM Spectrum Scale Client in a virtual system pattern

You can create a virtual system pattern that includes a IBM Spectrum Scale client.

Before you begin

You must be granted access to patterns, access to create patterns, or have the Workload resources administration with Full permission to complete this task.

You should have already added two script packages to the catalog for creating the client cluster and connecting to the external IBM Spectrum Scale Server.

About this task

Use the Pattern Builder to create a virtual system pattern, and include a pattern component that you define as a IBM Spectrum Scale Client, by adding the IBM Spectrum Scale Client policy and then adding the two IBM Spectrum Scale script packages that you created.
Note: You can choose the following additional options:
  • Instead of adding the IBM Spectrum Scale Client policy, you can add the GPFS Client Install for off-rack GPFS Server script package to your IBM Spectrum Scale Client pattern component.
  • Using this script package approach, you can also create a IBM Spectrum Scale Client in a classic virtual system pattern by using the Pattern Editor.

For more information about using this script package approach and creating IBM Spectrum Scale Clients in virtual system patterns and classic virtual system patterns, see the Related links.

Procedure

  1. Click Patterns > Virtual System Patterns.
  2. Click Create New.
  3. Use the Pattern Builder to create your virtual system pattern from a blank pattern or a template.
For more information about building virtual system patterns, see the Related links. Give your pattern a unique name and configure the basic properties as needed.
Note: Similarly, if you are working with classic virtual system patterns, use the Pattern Editor to create your virtual system pattern.
  4. Use the Pattern Builder (or Pattern Editor) to drag and drop your middleware/application software component.
Ensure that the memory size for your middleware/application software component is greater than or equal to 4096 MB.
  5. In this step you choose one of the following options:
    • Attach the IBM Spectrum Scale Client Policy to your middleware/application software component.
    • Add the GPFS Client Install for off-rack GPFS Server script package to your middleware/application software component.

Either option adds the required IBM Spectrum Scale installation process for connecting the deployed pattern instance to aIBM Spectrum Scale Server. The deployed pattern instance can then access and use the shared file system associated with the IBM Spectrum Scale Server.

If you use the IBM Spectrum Scale Client Policy option, configure the settings in the properties pane for your IBM Spectrum Scale Client. In the configuration parameters, choose GPFS Client Install for off rack GPFS Server from the available configuration options.

If you use the script package option, no other action is needed at this time. After deployment you can run the script package on demand to perform the IBM Spectrum Scale installation process.

  6. Add the ConnectToExternalGPFSServer script package to your middleware/application software component.
  7. Continue adding pattern components and configure your virtual system pattern as needed.
  8. Click Save.
