Allocations for several plans associated with the same group

Within a resource group, the number of concurrently active plans affects the resources that are applied to each plan. The allocated resources for a resource group are shared among the active plans for that group.

For example, if all three of the resource groups described in Figure 1 are busy, and if the analysts group has:
  • One active plan, that plan receives all the resources allocated to that group (50%)
  • Two active plans that have the same priority, they each get half of the resources allocated to that group (25% each)
  • Ten active plans that all have the same priority, each plan gets one-tenth of the resources allocated to that group (5% each)
If the concurrent plans have different priorities, the system allocates the resources within the group by using priority weighting factors as described in Priority weighting and resource allocation.
The following figure illustrates how a busy analysts users group can result in its plans being given fewer overall system resources per plan than a single active plan in either the rptquery or public groups, even though those groups have lower overall resource minimums.

As you plan the resource percentages for each resource group, be sure to consider the number of plans that are likely to run concurrently for that group. You might need to adjust the resource allocation percentages to ensure that busy groups have enough resources to complete the expected number of concurrent plans in a timely manner. You can also configure a limit for the number of active plans from a resource group to ensure that a specific number of active plans have reasonable resource allocations; any additional plans wait until the active plans finish.
