Connecting a Pulsar real user monitoring job to a DNS answer
You can enable automatic updates from a real user monitoring (RUM) Pulsar (RUM) job to the Pulsar data metadata field in the corresponding answers to facilitate automatic updates based on the collected RUM performance and availability data. Use this in conjunction with the Pulsar filters in the record's Filter Chain configuration to steer traffic dynamically as network conditions change.
Pulsar RUM traffic steering is available as an add-on feature to a Premium plan.
Before you begin
- You must have configured your DNS zone, record, and the corresponding answers to which you want to connect the Pulsar (RUM) job.
- You must have configured the RUM application and jobs.
Instructions
Complete the following instructions to connect a RUM (Pulsar) job to the RUM metadata in the corresponding DNS answer.
- Click .
- Click the relevant zone name to view details, including the corresponding DNS records.
- Click the relevant record to view details, including the corresponding DNS answers.
- Next to the first answer, click the menu icon to the right and select Edit answer metadata.
- In the Answer metadata modal, select the Pulsar data setting in the left column.
- Under Choose resource, select the RUM job corresponding to this DNS answer.
- If you plan to use the Pulsar Availability Threshold filter, click the toggle next to Threshold On to apply an availability threshold. Define a minimum availability percentage for an answer to remain in the answer pool. Answers whose average availability over the last five minutes falls below the defined threshold will be removed from the answer pool as queries are processed by the Filter Chain.
- Optionally, you can apply a bias to the metadata value to offset the collected performance measurement. You can add (plus) or subtract (minus) some number of milliseconds or specify a positive or negative percentage to apply to the measured latency of this endpoint. Any Pulsar Performance filters will use the adjusted value instead of the real value to determine the best-performing endpoint.
- Click OK.
- Repeat this process for each answer in the DNS record.
Next steps
After connecting each RUM job to its corresponding answer, configure a Filter Chain containing one of the RUM-based traffic steering filters: Pulsar Performance Stabilize, Pulsar Availability Threshold, Pulsar Performance Sort, and Pulsar Availability Sort.
