User Image Copy

You can create User Image Copy (UIC) for DBDS without the standard IMS utilities (DFSUDMP0, DFSUDMT0, and DFSUICP0) or IMS High Performance Image Copy.

For example, you can back up (replicate) DBDS using storage-based fast-replication facilities such as IBM FlashCopy. IMS Database Recovery Facility (DRF) supports User Image Copy with the recovery options: USEDBDS, USEAREA, and USEUICTIME. With DRF, you can recover DBDS using User Image Copy. However, database recovery process can be complicated and error prone because it requires the DBRC NOTIFY.UIC/NOTIFY.RECOV commands prior to running the DRF recovery job.

This figure shows how storage-based fast-replication facility can create User Image Copy without affecting IMS online system.
