Specify Target Software Instance Properties page

Use the Specify Target Software Instance Properties page to complete the Specify the properties for the target software instance step in the checklist. You can specify the name and description to use for the target software instance, and select the categories to which to assign the software instance.

When you click OK, z/OSMF performs the following actions:
  • Sets the deployment to complete.
  • Uses the information from the deployment to add a new software instance to the Software Instances table or to update an existing instance.
  • Attempts to collect information about the products, features, and FMIDs that are contained in the software instance. For more details about retrieving this information, see help topic Retrieving product information from SMP/E global and target zones.

For a description of the items displayed on the Specify Target Software Instance Properties page, see Table 1.

Table 1. Items on the Specify Target Software Instance Properties page
Item Description
Target software instance name Name of the target software instance. The name can contain up to 30 non-blank characters, including alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, and 0-9), mathematical symbols (< > - = | \), punctuation marks (? ! : ' " /), and special characters ($ _ # @ ^). The name is required and must be unique on the system. Software instance names are not case sensitive; for example, DB2v12r1 and DB2V12R1 are the same software instance. For more information, see help topic Naming software instances and deployments.
One of the following values is provided by default:
  • Name of the source software instance or portable software instance with a suffix appended. z/OSMF generates this value when you use a new deployment (not a copy) to create a new software instance or portable software instance.
  • Name of the original deployment's target software instance with a suffix appended. z/OSMF generates this value when you use a copy of a deployment to create a new software instance. The original deployment's target software instance is the software instance that was created as a result of the original deployment.
  • Name of the software instance that was replaced. z/OSMF provides this value when the objective of the deployment (new or copy) is to replace an existing software instance.

You can use the default name or modify it, as needed.

To generate the first two default values, z/OSMF appends an underscore (_) and a number to the source or target software instance name. For example, if the source software instance name is DB2V12R1, the default name for the new target software instance might be DB2V12R1_1. If adding the suffix causes the name to exceed 30 characters, the original name is truncated until the suffix can be added.

Description Description of the target software instance. It can contain up to 256 characters. The description is optional
One of the following values is provided by default:
  • Description of the source software instance. z/OSMF provides this value when you use a new deployment (not a copy) to create a new software instance.
  • Description of the original deployment's target software instance. z/OSMF provides this value when you use a copy of a deployment to create a new software instance.
  • Description of the software instance that was replaced. z/OSMF provides this value when the objective of the deployment (new or copy) is to replace an existing software instance.

You can use the default description or modify it, as needed.

Categories Categories to which the target software instance is assigned. One of the following sets of categories are selected by default:
  • Categories used for the source software instance or portable software instance. z/OSMF preselects these categories when you use a new deployment (not a copy) to create a new software instance or portable software instance.
  • Categories used for the original deployment's target software instance. z/OSMF preselects these categories when you create a copy of a deployment and use it to create a new software instance.
  • Categories used for the software instance that was replaced. z/OSMF preselects these categories when the objective of the deployment (new or copy) is to replace an existing software instance.

You can use the default categories or modify them, as needed. If your installation is using categories to control access to software instances and deployments and requires that all objects be assigned to a category, at least one category is required. Otherwise, assigning a software instance to a category is optional.

For more information about categories and to obtain examples, see help topic Organizing your software and deployments.
