Exploring the Gantt chart

On the Gantt chart tab, see assignments and resources for a schedule over a visual timeline. Identify where the schedule has bottlenecks or available time.

Before you begin

On the Dispatching dashboard, click a schedule. The Gantt chart tab opens for the schedule.

About this task

The Gantt chart is a comprehensive schedule visualization tool to help you plan schedules, and visualize bottlenecks and opportunities within schedules. Bottlenecks lead to worsening schedule inefficiencies. Opportunities lead to greater schedule efficiencies. The Gantt chart is broken into the following two main sections.
Table
Lists the resources that are needed for the work order assignments in a table view.
Chart
See the work order assignments for the resources. A bar represents a work order assignment that is plotted in a timeline view.

To interact with the Gantt chart in the Gantt chart tab, use the actions and functions in the following steps. The steps can be interchangeable.

Procedure

  1. Select a time frame. Then, the Gantt and map views displays the work order assignments for that time frame. Use one of the following functions to select your time frame.
    • The day or week selector.
    • The calendar date selector.
    • The forward and backward chevrons to move forward and backward by either a day or a week.
  2. Search table. Enter text in the search field to search for values in the table.
  3. Filter table values. Click the Filter icon to enable the filter function in the table and filter the table values.
  4. Resize table and Gantt chart. In the Gantt chart tab, drag the dividing line between the table and the Gantt chart to resize them.
  5. Preview work order details. Click a work order assignment bar to see a preview card. The preview card has high-level details about the work order for that assignment. In the preview card, click Work order details to see more details about the work order.
  6. Understand the shift end and start times for each resource. See the Gantt element for shift end and start times, which is plotted in the timeline for the resource. Where possible, modify calendars or split assignments to complete assignments as efficiently as possible. For more information about creating shift calendars in the Calendars application, see Working with calendars. For more information about splitting work into multiple assignments in the Graphical Assignment application, see Splitting work between people and shifts.
  7. Consider availability reason codes for resources. See the availability reason codes, which make a resource unavailable for work assignments, display in the Gantt. To modify the availability reason codes within Modify Person Availability in the People application, see Changing availability for assigned work.
  8. See assignment status for work order assignments. The colors in the Gantt chart bars are color codes that equate to the assignment status for the work order assignment.
    • Understand the color codes for the assignment status. Click a work order assignment in the Gantt and the work order preview card opens, which has information about the ‘Assignment status’. Also, familiarize yourself with the Gantt chart legend, see Figure 1 in this topic.
    • Change the assignment status for a work order, see Using the assignment status values. Then, the related assignment status color code is updated in the work order assignment in the Gantt and the assignment status is updated in the work order preview card.
  9. See assignments with the emergency icon and schedule work order assignments based on the emergency that is associated to a work order. To change the emergency for a work order, see Assigning emergency work in the dashboard and Defining emergency work.
  10. See assignments with the lock icon and schedule other work around any locked work orders. A locked work order assignment can be due to a resource lock or schedule lock. To change the lock status for a work order, see Assigning work.
  11. Open a map, click the map icon.
    • From Maximo® Manage 8.7 to 9.0, the Map Manager application defines the map. The map is not tied to a work order, schedule or project. In the map, search for an asset or an attribute.
    • After Maximo Manage 9.0, use the following map functions.
      • Configure the Map Manager application with map provider properties for route services. Then, you see the map with the technicians route for the work order assignments. Also, a map marker displays for each assignment on the route. If you don't have the route services configuration in Map Manager, then you see the map markers for the work orders on a map but you cannot see the route.
      • Click a map marker. Then a preview card for the work order assignment displays with details about the work order assignment and a link for Work order details.
      • By default each map marker has a number that represents the sequence by which the work orders are to be done by the technician.
