Setting up a development environment on Eclipse

Install IBM Developer for z/OS or IBM Explorer for z/OS

After you installed the prerequisites, complete the following installation steps:

  1. Open the Downloads page.

    If a notification appears that you are leaving the ibm.com website, then click the link in the notification.

  2. In the IBM Explorer for z/OS Aqua box, click Eclipse Tools.

    You might need to click > or < to scroll the box into view.

  3. Under Step 1: choose your products, select IBM® Developer for z/OS® or IBM Explorer for z/OS and click Select.

  4. Under Step 2: choose an Aqua version, continue to follow the instructions in the wizard prompts to choose Aqua 3.4.
    Tip: To view details about supported product versions, click View details. To return to a previous step in the wizard, click the step in the sidebar. Do not use the browser Back control. The Back control returns to the overall Downloads page.
  5. Under Step 3: choose an installation client, select the Eclipse p2 installation client and click Select.

  6. Under Step 4: select a starting point, select Starting from fresh.

  7. On the Download and install page, download, and extract the IBM Developer for z/OS or IBM Explorer for z/OS package to a location of your choosing. The license agreement opens in a new web page.

  8. Read the terms of the license agreements and click I agree. The client installation package is downloaded to the default download location of your workstation.
  9. Return to the Download and install page to complete the installation procedure described in the wizard.

Now, you must install the IBM watsonx Code Assistant™ for Z Code Explanation extension on your development environment.

Install IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Code Explanation

Complete the following steps to install IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z Code Explanation extension:
  1. Download the part named watsonx Code Assistant for Z Developer Tools. Inside this compressed file are VS Code extensions and the new watsonx Code Assistant for Z Eclipse archive file. Copy the archive file to a separate location.
  2. Go to the installation directory for IBM Developer for z/OS or IBM Explorer for z/OS. If you are on Windows, run developer_for_zos.exe or zosexplorer.exe. If you are on a Mac, run IBM Developer for zOS or IBM Explorer for zOS.
  3. After your client starts, use the Help > Install New Software menu to also install the new watsonx Code Assistant for Z Eclipse plug-in.
  4. Click Add to add the repository for the new watsonx Code Assistant for Z Eclipse plug-in.
    1. In the Name field, enter wca4ze.
    2. For the Location field, click Archive and select the archive file that was copied to a separate location for the new watsonx Code Assistant for Z Eclipse plug-in.
    3. Click Add.
  5. In the Available Software dialog, select IBM watsonx Code Assistant for Z and click Next.
  6. Continue to click Next and accept the license terms and then click Finish.

    When prompted, restart IBM Developer for z/OS or IBM Explorer for z/OS to complete the installation.

Configure proxy server

If your Eclipse IDE requires the use of a proxy server to access watsonx™ services over the internet, then you must configure such a proxy server in your Eclipse IDE settings.
  1. In the Eclipse IDE Preferences window, navigate to the Network Connections section.
  2. From the Active Provider list, select Manual.
  3. Select HTTP in the list and click Edit.
  4. Fill in the proxy server host and port number. If prompted, enter your username and password details.
  5. Click OK.
