Surcharges

Carrier service providers might apply extra charges and fees that are extra to the standard shipping rate. You can configure different types of surcharges for each carrier service. The surcharge amount varies and it depends on the type of surcharge and the surcharge configuration details.

Surcharges compensate the service provider for deliveries that might incur extra costs such as fuel, remote shipping routes, packaging, or special handling fees. You can configure the surcharges at the carrier service or zone component level.

Surcharges are divided into the following categories:

The carrier service and zone component surcharges consist of the following types of surcharges:

Fixed
A fixed surcharge is when a carrier service provider adds an extra charge of a fixed amount to deliver a package on a shipping route. The extra charge is shown in the Carrier service example, where Global US delivery applies a fixed surcharge of 2 USD across all routes.
Percentage
A percentage surcharge is when a carrier service provider adds an extra charge that is a percentage of the base rate to deliver a package on a shipping route. The extra charge is shown in the zone component example, where OnTrac adds an extra surcharge of 10% across the San Francisco to Los Angeles route.

Different scenarios are available for the carrier service and zone component surcharges. For more information, see Scenario: Carrier service surcharges and Scenario: Zone component surcharges.

Charge tiers

You can assign a charge tier to define the order in which to apply the surcharges. For more information, see Configuring carrier services. View the scenario in relation to charge tiers. For more information, see Assigning a charge tier to a surcharge.
