Scenario: Applying carrier pickup schedules
This scenario demonstrates how carrier pickup times impact promising calculations for ship-to-home orders. By defining carrier pickup times, you control when carriers collect shipments during the day. Carrier pickup times help to provide accurate expected delivery dates to customers and reduce the risk of shipping delays.
Example 1: Carrier service with configured pickup times
In this example, the following configuration is available:
- Carrier pickup times: 12 noon and 4:30 PM every day
- Transit time: 1 day
- Order requests: 10 AM, 1 PM, and 5 PM
Result
- Order at 10 AM: The order is ready before the 12 noon pickup. The expected ship date is the same day at 12 noon. The order is delivered the next day.
- Order at 1 PM: The 12 noon pickup passed. The next pickup is 4:30 PM. The expected ship date is the same day at 4:30 PM. The order is delivered the next day.
- Order at 5 PM: Both the 12 noon and 4:30 PM pickups passed. The next available pickup is 12 noon the following day. The expected ship date is the next day. The order is delivered two days from the order date.
Carrier pickup times restrict shipments to specific points in the day, enabling you to coordinate with carrier schedules and provide accurate delivery dates to customers.
Example 2: Carrier service with no pickup times defined
In this example, the following configuration is available:
- Carrier service: Fedex_Ground
- Carrier pickup times: Not defined for this carrier service at this node.
- Transit time: 1 day
- Order request: 10 AM
Result
Because no carrier pickup times are defined for the Fedex_Ground carrier service at this node, the carrier service is excluded from promising calculations. The system cannot use the the Fedex_Ground carrier service to fulfill the order from this node.
