Saving custom widgets as templates

You can save a widget as a custom widget template, only when you create the custom widget for the first time, and when you use APM, ITM, and ICAM Connectors in the widget. If you use JDBC and CEM Connectors or saved data definition query in a widget, then you cannot save the widget as a custom widget template.

Procedure

Complete the following steps to save a custom widget as a custom widget template:

  1. Create a custom widget by using APM, ITM, or ICAM Connector.

    For more information, see Creating custom widgets.

  2. To save the widget, click Save, and in the SAVE AS pane of the Save Widget window, complete any of the following steps:
    • To save the widget only as a template, click Template.
    • To save the widget as well as a template, click Widget as well as Template.
  3. Based on your selections, enter information in the following fields as required:
    • In the Widget Name field, enter a unique name for the widget, if not entered in the earlier step.
    • To save the widget to an existing category, click Existing category, select a category name from the drop-down list, and then click Save.
    • To save the widget to a new category, click New Category, enter a category name, and then click Save.

      The newly created widget is listed under Most Recently Created Widgets in the navigation pane. The widget name displays a chart icon next to it. The chart icon is of the chart type that is used in widget creation. For example, if the widget is created by using a Line chart, then a Line chart Line chart icon is displayed.

    • In the Template Name field, enter a unique name for the template.
    • To save the template to an existing category, click Existing category, select a category name from the drop-down list, and then click Save.
    • To save the template to a new category, click New Category, enter a category name, and then click Save.

      The newly created widget template is listed under Most Recently Created Widgets in the navigation pane. The template name displays a chart icon within curly brackets next to it. The chart icon is of the chart type that is used in widget creation. For example, if the widget template is created by using a Line chart, then a Line chart Line chart icon is displayed within curly brackets. Also, when you open the template, it displays an incomplete data definition Incomplete data definition icon as the data source and instance selections are lost.

Results

The newly created custom widgets and widget templates are listed under Most Recently Created Widgets in the navigation pane.
The All Widgets page displays the following audit trail details for each custom widget:
  • Custom widget template name
  • Custom widget category
  • The templates are never published. Hence, the Published to column does not display any Engine instance name.
  • Date and time when the custom widget template was first created, and the username of the user who first created the custom widget template.
  • Date and time when the custom widget template was last modified, and the username of the user who last modified the widget template. Only the latest record is displayed.
