Creating a target using data spreading

Use data spreading to create a target scenario. You can use direct input or straight-line spreading options.

About this task

Data spreading distributes values across time or dimensions according to rules that you define. In Planning Analytics Workspace, you use the Spread Data Options menu to apply spreading by using one of these approaches:

Direct input
Fast and manual. Use for quick checks.
Straight line
Ideal for long-term trajectories, such as net-zero.

Validate scenarios visually and use consistent naming, such as Target or SBTi Target.

Procedure

  1. Copy baseline values to the target scenario:
    1. In the Scenario Modelling Data Spreading worksheet, set Scenario to Target in the grid view.
    1. Right-click the cell for all locations and time periods. Select Spread Data Options.
    2. Select Relative Proportional spreading to copy baseline values into the target scenario.
This option preserves the original structure of emissions data across dimensions.
    3. Set the reference scenario to Baseline. Confirm the values to spread.
    4. Optional: Apply growth percentages or straight-line spreads to shape future targets.
  2. Select a modeling approach:
    Approach A: Direct input
Enter values directly into the grid at the year and location intersection. View the impact in the graph.
    Approach B: Straight-line spreading
    1. Set the end state, such as zero emissions by 2031.
    2. Select the range of cells for the start year and end year, such as 2026–2031.
    3. Right-click and select Spread Data Options. Choose Straight Line to interpolate values evenly across the selected range, creating a smooth glide path toward net-zero.
