Installing and upgrading

The IBM® Storage Protect backup-archive client helps you protect information on your workstations.

You can maintain backup versions of your files that you can restore if the original files are damaged or lost. You can also archive infrequently used files, preserve them in their current state, and retrieve them when necessary.

The backup-archive client works along with the IBM Storage Protect server. Contact your IBM Storage Protect server administrator to obtain backup or archive access to the server, or refer to the server publications to install and configure the IBM Storage Protect server.

Windows client package signature verification

  1. Download the client package from the official IBM download site.
  2. To verify client package integrity by using a SHA‑256 checksum, run the following command:

    certutil -hashfile <client_package> SHA256
    Compare the computed SHA‑256 checksum with the checksum value provided on the download site. The values must match exactly.
  3. Extract the client package, for example:
    8.2.0.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exe
    The files are extracted to the current directory.
  4. Verify the digital signature by using the following method:

    1. Right‑click the downloaded installation file (for example, spinstall.exe or IBM Storage Protect Client.msi).
    2. Select Properties > Digital Signatures
      Note: If the Digital Signatures tab is not displayed, the file is not digitally signed.

Linux (Ubuntu and Debian)

  1. The GPG public key file PRD0001289key.pub.asc is included in the client package bundle.
  2. Import the GPG public key:
    gpg --import PRD0001289key.pub.asc
  3. Verify the client package:
    dpkg-sig --verify <client_package>.deb
    If the package is signed, the output displays:
    GOODSIG _gpgbuilder 701C601D5BF7B2385059E068CE711BB6E58157A3 1774343611
    If the package is not signed, the output displays:
    NOSIG

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)(x86_64, ppc64le, s390x)

  1. The GPG public key file PRD0001289key.pub.asc is included in the client package bundle.

  2. Import the GPG public key:
    rpm --import PRD0001289key.pub.asc
  3. Verify the client package:
    rpm -Kv <client_package>.rpm
    If the package is signed, the output displays:
    Header V4 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID e58157a3: OK
    If the public key is not available, the output displays:
    
    Header V4 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID e58157a3: NOKEY
    
    If NOKEY is displayed, ensure that the public key was imported successfully before continuing.

AIX and other Linux platforms

For AIX and selected Linux platforms, the client package bundle includes the following files:
  • PRD0001289key.pem.pub.key
  • <package_name>.sig
  1. Run the following command:
    openssl dgst -verify PRD0001289key.pem.pub.key -keyform PEM -sha256 -signature <package_name>.sig -binary <package_name>
    If the package is signed successfully, the output displays:
    Verified OK
    If the verification fails, the output displays:
    Verification Failure
  2. To verify the integrity and content of the public key, run the following command:
    
    openssl rsa -noout -text -inform PEM -in PRD0001289key.pem.pub.key -pubin
    The output must indicate a 4096‑bit RSA public key with the expected modulus and exponent, for example:
