Preparing an object policy domain

Before you send data from other, non-IBM® Storage Protect Plus object clients to IBM Storage Protect, create an object policy domain. An object policy domain defines the rules that control the data operations for the object client.

Before you begin

Object clients that are defined or updated must be assigned to object policy domains that are created by using the DEFINE OBJECTDOMAIN command. All new object client nodes must be assigned to object policy domains. An object client node is associated with an object policy domain when the node is registered or updated by using the REGISTER NODE or UPDATE NODE command.

Procedure

  1. Determine the settings to use for the object policy domain. The settings will specify how data is sent from the object client to IBM Storage Protect.
  2. Review the following considerations for specifying object policy domains for data operations.
    • An object policy domain can specify management classes for standard storage pools, which are cloud-container and directory-container storage pools.
    • To send data to a cloud-container or directory-container storage pool, you must use the STANDARDPOOL parameter to define the storage pool object policy domain. For example, if the name of the object policy domain is MYDOMAIN and the name of the storage pool is HOTPOOL, you would issue the following command:
      define objectdomain mydomain standardpool=hotpool
    • There are no inactive versions of objects. When you define an object policy domain, the following storage management policies are specified automatically:
      • The Versions Data Exists field is set to 1.
      • The Retain Extra Versions and the Retain Only Version fields are set to 0.
  3. Create an object policy domain by using the Operations Center. Follow the instructions in Creating a policy domain.
Tip: Alternatively, issue the DEFINE OBJECTDOMAIN command to create an object policy domain as described in Define a policy domain for object clients.

Example: Display detailed information about an object policy domain for an S3 send operation

When the object policy domain was created, it was assigned management classes and copy groups. You can use the QUERY COPYGROUP command to view information about the destination storage pools for the policy domain. In the following example, the policy domain name is XYZ. The destination storage pool is HOTPOOL.

query copygroup xyz standard f=d

                Policy Domain Name: XYZ
                   Policy Set Name: STANDARD
                   Mgmt Class Name: STANDARD
                   Copy Group Name: STANDARD
                   Copy Group Type: Backup
              Versions Data Exists: 1
             Versions Data Deleted: 1
             Retain Extra Versions: 0
               Retain Only Version: 0
                         Copy Mode: Modified
                Copy Serialization: Shared Static
                    Copy Frequency: 0
                  Copy Destination: HOTPOOL
