Configuration overview

Before you start sending data from an object client of type OTHER, follow the instructions in this configuration overview to ensure that IBM® Storage Protect, the object agent, and the object client are correctly configured.

Tasks for configuring IBM Storage Protect

After you complete the configuration, you can send data from object clients to container storage pools or to cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3, IBM Cloud® Object Storage, or Microsoft Azure.

You must configure the IBM Storage Protect server to accept communication from an object client and to process requests for Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) operations. The Amazon S3 protocol enables communication between the object client and IBM Storage Protect.

One object agent is allowed on each IBM Storage Protect server. Multiple object clients can be registered to each object agent.

Action How to
Create a storage pool for the data from the object client.
You can store object client data in either directory-container storage pools or cloud-container storage pools.
Restrictions:
  • If you use a cloud-container storage pool, ensure that the data in that storage pool is not sent to a long-term storage class such as Amazon S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval (formerly Amazon S3 Glacier). The data must be readily available for read operations.
  • Ensure that object client data is not tiered from a directory-container storage pool or a cloud-container storage pool to tape storage. S3 data in these types of pools cannot be tiered to tape.
To create storage pools by using the Operations Center, follow the appropriate instructions:
Tip: Alternatively, issue the DEFINE STGPOOL command to create a storage pool as described in the following topics:
Create an object policy domain for the storage pool.

The object policy domain defines the rules that control the backup services for the object client.

To create an object policy domain by using the Operations Center, follow the instructions in Creating a policy demain.

Tip: Alternatively, issue the DEFINE OBJECTDOMAIN command to create an object policy domain as described in Define a policy domain for object clients.
Add an object agent and object client on the IBM Storage Protect server.

The object agent provides a gateway between the object client and the IBM Storage Protect server.

The object client identifies the S3 client and enables operations from the S3 client.

You must create the object agent before you can create the object client.

To create an object agent, follow the instructions in Configuring an object agent service.

To create an object client, follow the instructions in Configuring an object client.

Tasks for configuring the object client

Using the access key ID and secret key information that was provided when the object client was created on the IBM Storage Protect server, configure your object client application.

Create a bucket on your object client to use with IBM Storage Protect. The equivalent of a bucket on the IBM Storage Protect server is a file space.

For additional configuration instructions for the object client, see the documentation for your object client.
