Accessing Service levels

To use Service levels in Instana, you need a role with the appropriate permissions. You can configure these permissions when you create a new role or when you modify an existing role.

Service levels permissions apply to service level objectives (SLOs), Smart Alerts, correction windows, and Apdex capabilities in the Instana UI.

All Service levels permissions are granted to users in the Owner role by default.

For more information about configuring roles and permissions in the Instana UI, see Managing user access.

SLOs

To work with SLOs, users must have the Access Service levels permission. This permission allows users to open the Service levels section and view existing SLO and Apdex configurations.

The following additional permissions control what users can manage in Service levels:

  • Create, configure and delete SLO configurations and legacy SLO: Create, update, and delete SLO configurations, including legacy SLOs.
  • Create, configure and delete SLO correction windows: Create, update, and delete correction windows for SLOs.
  • Create, configure and delete SLO smart alerts: Create, update, and delete Smart Alerts for SLOs.
  • Create, configure and delete Apdex configurations: Create, update, and delete Apdex configurations.
Note: Access is also limited by the permissions that apply to the underlying entities that are linked to the SLO or Apdex configuration. For example, users can work only with applications, websites, synthetic tests, or infrastructure entities that they are allowed to access.

Smart Alerts

To create and manage Smart Alerts for SLOs, users must have the Create, configure and delete SLO smart alerts permission.

Correction windows

To create and manage correction windows, users must have the Create, configure and delete SLO correction windows permission.

Apdex

The Create, configure, and delete Apdex configurations permission allows you to create, update (name and tags only), or remove Apdex configurations.

Access is restricted based on the permissions that are applied to entities (applications and websites) that are linked to your Apdex configuration. For example, if you can view an application or website, you can also create an Apdex configuration for it.

Team associations

You can assign teams to an SLO, but only teams that you belong to are available for selection.

After teams are associated with an SLO, only their members can view it. The access level of members depends on their roles within the team.

Access is further limited by permissions for entities that are linked to the SLO. Users cannot view Smart Alerts if they lack access to any linked SLO. Unauthorized SLOs do not appear in the correction window.
