Installing Self-Hosted Custom Edition (Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform)

You can create a new self-hosted Instana backend in a Red Hat OpenShift container platform or Kubernetes cluster by installing the Instana Enterprise operator and then configuring the Instana backend. Also, you can upgrade your operator-based Instana backend to a newer release based on your needs. Instana uses multi-arch images. The images are the same across all platforms.

Custom Edition includes the operator and Instana backend. Install Custom Edition on a dedicated OpenShift cluster. Do not run the Instana backend on the same cluster as application workloads. Use cluster-level admin access to install Custom Edition. You need this access to create and manage shared objects that Instana uses across the cluster.

For more information about the backend releases, see Instana backend releases.

For more information about the Custom Edition releases, see Release notes for Custom Edition .

Compatibility matrix for Custom Edition

Before you install, upgrade, or migrate Custom Edition, it is important to ensure that all components in your deployment are compatible. Each Custom Edition version supports only specific versions of the Instana backend, and using unsupported combinations can result in failed deployments or unexpected behaviour. The compatibility matrix helps you identify which Instana backend versions are supported for a Custom Edition version.

You must use this matrix when planning your deployment to select a valid combination of Custom Edition and backend versions. Use this table to:

  • Identify the Instana backend versions that are compatible with your selected Custom Edition version
  • Validate version combinations before installation or upgrade
  • Plan upgrades by determining supported target versions.

The following table lists the Custom Edition version and the Instana backend versions that are compatible.

What to do next

  • Some features in Instana are disabled by default. To enable these features for Self-Hosted Custom Edition (Kubernetes or Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform), add the feature flags in the configuration file for the core. For more information, see Enabling optional features.

  • You can upgrade Custom Edition from one release to another. For more information, see Upgrading.
