Email alert channel

To send alert notifications from Instana to multiple emails in real time, create an email alert channel.

Creating an email alert channel

Use the Instana UI to set up your alert channel:

  1. From the main navigation, click Settings > Global settings.
  2. Within the section Events & alerts, click Alert channels.
  3. Click Add alert channel.
  4. Within the Add an alert channel window, select Email from the list of available Unidirectional channels. Then, click Add alert channel.
  5. Configure your alert channel settings:
    • Name : Enter a unique name for identifying the channel.
    • Emails: Enter the email, or emails, that need to be sent alert notifications. Alerts can be sent to multiple emails.

      You can click Send test email to test whether the entered email addresses are valid and can receive a test notification.

    • Teams: You can optionally tag the channel so that members of the specified team, or teams, can more easily find the channel in the UI.

  6. (Optional) Expand the Advanced section to customize notifications:
    • Custom subject(public preview): Add Add a custom prefix to the subject line for email notifications. For every email notification that is sent out, you can add a custom prefix to it.

      By default when no custom subject is provided, the subject line for emails begin with Instana Alert:. You can define separate prefixes for different types of alerts. For example, for an incident you can add a prefix such as Instana Alert (Incident):.

      To add a custom subject line prefix, click Add custom subject . Then, select the type of alert (event) for which you want to add a custom prefix. You can add a subject prefix for the following types of alerts:
      • Issues
      • Incidents
      • Monitoring Issues (Agent)
      • Changes (Online, Offline, or Changes in events)
    • Add timezone: Set a specific time zone to ensure that email recipients view messages in the their local time instead of the default UTC time.

      To add a time zone, click Add timezone. Then, select the preferred time zone for the alert notifications.

    • Preview: You can optionally preview the email message before sending it.

Sending a test email alert

If you select Send test email, the test message that is sent follows a template format. The following image shows a successful test.

Alerting examples

After you create the alert channel, emails are sent for the following issues, incidents, and events:

  • On open issues or incident
  • On closed issues or incidents
  • On offline events
  • On online events
  • On change events
