Managing virtual images

You can manage virtual images to provide the operating system and product binary files that are required to create a classic virtual system instance.

Importing virtual images to the catalog
You can expand the collection of virtual images on the system by importing additional virtual images, provided by IBM®, to the catalog. Once the virtual image is available in the catalog, it can be used to create virtual system patterns.

You can clone virtual images in the catalog.
Extending partition and file system sizes
If you clone a virtual image and increase the size of one or more disks in the image, you need to run a set of operating system commands to extend the size of the partition and file system to use the additional disk space.
Extending and capturing virtual images
You can create custom virtual images by extending a virtual image. Extending a virtual image is the process of starting with a copy of a virtual image, modifying it, and storing the modified image as a new virtual image in the catalog. Extending a virtual image works only with a single cloud profile.
Exporting virtual images
Virtual images can be exported from the catalog to be used on other systems.

Mapping the operating system ID and version number to the VMware operating system name
In previous versions, the mapping between the OSID and OSName parameters for VMware was hardcoded and had to be updated to support a new operating system version. Starting in Cloud Pak System Version 2.3.0.0, you can dynamically update this mapping.
