Adding devices to Apple Device Enrollment Program (DEP) using Apple Configurator for mobile devices

Add iOS devices to Apple Device Enrollment Program (DEP) by using the Apple Configurator mobile app so that the devices automatically enroll in IBM® MaaS360® during setup.

Before you begin

You must meet the following requirements:

  • An iOS device with the Apple Configurator app installed. The device does not need to be supervised or managed.
  • Access to Apple Business Manager.
  • An active IBM MaaS360 MDM server configured in Apple Business Manager.
  • The target iPhone, iPad, or mac device (new or erased).

About this task

You can add iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices to IBM MaaS360 by using the mobile version of Apple Configurator. This method registers devices and ensures automatic enrollment in IBM MaaS360 during the device setup process.

Procedure

  1. On the iOS device, download and install Apple Configurator from the App Store.
  2. Open Apple Configurator and sign in with your Apple Business Manager account.
  3. Tap Settings and configure the following options:
    1. Network Configuration
      • Select the Network Configuration to provision the device.
      • Select a Configuration Profile for advanced Wi-Fi or network settings.
    2. MDM Server Assignment
      • Select Default to assign the default MDM server.
      • Select Specific to assign a specific MaaS360 MDM server.
  4. Tap the checkmark icon to save the settings.
  5. Power on the device that you want to provision.
  6. Proceed through setup assistant and stop at one of the following screens:
    • Choose a Wi-Fi Network screen for iPhone or iPad.
    • Select your country or region screen for mac.
  7. Bring the provisioning iOS device close to the target device, and complete one of the following actions:
    1. Scan the Pairing Code
      • Use Apple Configurator to scan the animated pairing code displayed on the device.
    2. Manual Pairing
      • Tap Pair Manually on the device.
      • Tap Manual Pairing in Apple Configurator.
      • Enter the six-digit code that is displayed on the device.
  8. Apple Configurator will now register the device in Apple Business Manager. Allow the process to complete.
  9. When prompted, tap one of the following actions:
    • Erase and Shut Down (iPhone or iPad)
    • Shut Down (mac)
  10. Sign in to Apple Business Manager and verify that the device is added.
  11. Confirm that the device is assigned to the MaaS360 MDM server.
  12. Power on the device and complete Setup Assistant.

Results

The iOS devices can now automatically enroll in IBM MaaS360.
