Returning permits to work
To ensure that personnel are aware that the plant is returned to a safe condition, you specify the status of the work activities. If the work is not complete, then the details about the work that was done must be communicated to the team that is taking over the tasks.
About this task
The team members who are responsible for returning the permit to work to another team must describe the steps that were taken to remove the isolations or inhibits. For isolations, care must be taken to ensure that important details are communicated. You can include details when you want to focus attention on safety issues or other information.
Procedure
- In the Permit to Work application, select the permit to work for which you want to specify return details.
- On the Handback Details table of the Handback and Cancellation tab, specify whether the work was completed, who did the work. The signoff date and time are specified by the performing authority.
- Specify whether the plant was returned to a safe condition, and the person who is confirming that the plant is returned to a safe condition. The signoff date and time are specified by the issuing authority.
- Specify the details of whether the isolations were verified as removed, whether the plant was returned to production, and whether inhibits were removed. The signoff dates are specified by the isolation authority and the signoff times by the issuing authority.
- Save the record.
Example
Inhibits are associated with alarm panels, emergency shutdown systems, and fire and gas systems. During maintenance work, it might be necessary to inhibit an alarm circuit. When you are ready to return the permit to work, you reactivate the circuit when it is safe to do so. You then specify that the inhibit was removed.
