Associating lessons learned with investigations

A lesson that is learned is a type of solution that is normally associated with an after-action review. Lessons learned document knowledge that is acquired from policies and procedures that led to successful and unsuccessful results. You document lessons learned to improve future performance.

About this task

If you cannot find an appropriate lesson that is learned, you can create one and submit it for approval. An administrator must approve the lesson that is learned for general use. Lessons that are learned are stored in the Solution database table and maintained in the Solutions (Oil) application.

Procedure

  1. Display the investigation for which you seek a lesson learned.
  2. On the Solution Details tab, click the Lessons Learned subtab, and then click New Row.
  3. In the Solution field, select an option to search for lessons learned. If you go to the Solutions (Oil) application, filter the records on the List tab to return only lessons learned.
If the status of the lesson that is learned is Draft or Active, you can associate the lesson that is learned with an investigation.
    1. If one or more applicable lessons learned exist, select the identifiers of those records.
    2. If an applicable lesson learned does not exist, create a draft lesson learned. In the Solution field, select Detail Menu > Go To > Solutions (Oil), and create a draft lesson learned.
  4. Save the investigation record.

What to do next

If you created a lesson that is learned, you can associate it with the investigation after an administrator changes the status of the new lesson that is learned to Active.
