Calculating carbon dioxide equivalent emissions automatically

When you record emission data in incident events, Maximo® Manage automatically calculates the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) by fetching the Envizi data.

Before you begin

Before you can calculate CO₂e emissions, the following prerequisites must be met:

  • The Envizi API connection must be configured by your system administrator
  • Emission gas types must be set up in the system
  • You must have access to create or modify incident events

About this task

When you save an incident emission record with the required information, the calculated CO₂e amount and unit of measure that is fetched from Envizi based on gas type, quantity, and location is automatically populated in the emission record.

Procedure

  1. From the side navigation menu, click Safety and Quality Management > Incidents (HSE).
  2. Create a new incident or select an existing incident.
  3. In the incident record, complete the following fields:
    • Location - Select the location where the incident occurred
    • Asset - Select the asset associated with the incident
  4. Click the Incident Events tab.
  5. On the Incident Events tab, click New row to create a new event.
  6. In the Event Type field, select ENVIRONMENTAL.
    The Emission Details section is displayed.
  7. Complete the following fields in the incident event:
    • Event Category - Select the category for the event. For example, MAJOR.
    • Emission Type - Select the type of emission. For example, AIR.
    • Emission Category - Select the emission category. For example, LEAKAGE.
    • Emission Impact - Select the impact type. For example, DIRECT-FUG.
  8. In the Emission Details section, complete the following required fields:
    • Emission Data Type - Select the type of emission gas. For example, CO2.
    • Emission Amount - Enter the quantity of the emission
    • Unit of Measure - Select the unit of measurement for the emission. For example, KILOGRAM.
    Note: To calculate emission, the Country and State fields are automatically fetched from the service address of the associated asset, location, site or from the user logged into the application.
    For example, to record a CO2 emission, select CO2 as the emission data type, enter 10 as the amount, and select KILOGRAM as the unit of measure.
    When you move to the next field, the following CO₂e values from Envizi are fetched, calculated automatically and saved.
    • Emission Gas Type. For example, CO2
    • Emission Amount. For example, 10
    • Unit of Measure. For example, KILOGRAM
  9. Click Save to save the incident record.
  10. View the calculated CO₂e values in the following fields:
    • CO₂e Amount - The calculated carbon dioxide equivalent quantity
    • CO₂e Unit of Measure - The unit of measurement for the CO₂e amount
  11. To view the fugitive emissions for a location, complete the following steps:
    1. From the side navigation menu, click Safety and Quality Management > Locations (HSE).
    2. Search for and select the location.
    3. Click More Actions > View Emissions > View Fugitive Emissions.
    4. Review the fugitive emissions table, which displays the following columns:
      • Incident
      • Event Type
      • Emission Type
      • Date
      • Emission Amount
      • Unit of Measure that is provided by the Envizi API and stored as a domain
      • Emission Data Type
      • CO₂e amount that is calculated by the Envizi and stored as a domain
      • CO₂e unit of measure that is provided by the Envizi API and stored as a domain

Results

The CO₂e emission values are automatically calculated and stored in the incident event record. You can use these values for sustainability reporting and environmental compliance tracking. You can view the CO₂e emission values for a location.

What to do next

If the API calculation fails, check that all required fields are completed and that the Envizi API connection is configured correctly.
