Creating commodity groups

You can create a commodity group to identify a grouping of items, tools, or services. A commodity group contains a grouping of individual commodity codes. Classifying items, tools, services with commodity groups and commodity codes provides a way for you to analyze spending by product type. You first define a commodity group and then add and associate individual commodity codes to the group.

About this task

Once you have defined commodities you can associate them with company, contract, and item records. You can also associate commodities with individual purchase order or requisition lines for items, service items, or tools that do not have commodity codes assigned to them, including special order materials or services.

You can create commodity groups and codes in the following asset management system applications:
  • Companies
  • Item Master
  • Purchase Orders
  • Service Items
  • Tools

Procedure

  1. Open an application.
  2. Select the Add/Modify Commodity Codes action.
  3. In the Commodity Groups table window, click New Row.
  4. In the Commodity Group field, enter an identifier for the commodity group.
  5. Specify whether you want a service type item or service level agreement to use this commodity group.
    Option Service
    Use commodity group Selected
    Do not use commodity group Cleared
  6. In the Commodity Codes for Commodity Group table window, click New Row.
  7. In the Commodity Code field, enter an identifier for the commodity.
  8. Specify whether you want a service type item or service level agreement to use this commodity code.
    Option Service
    Use commodity code Selected
    Do not use commodity code Cleared
  9. Click OK.
