Removing a disk drive or solid-state drive from an ESLL or ESLS storage enclosure
To remove a disk drive or solid-state drive (SSD) from an enclosure, complete the steps in this procedure.
Procedure
- Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is plugged into a ground jack or connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
-
Choose from the following options:
- If the system power is turned off, continue with step 3.
- If the system has the power turned on and if the AIX® operating system controls the slot, continue with step 5.
- If the system has the power turned on and if the IBM® i operating system controls the slot, continue with step 7.
- If the system has the power turned on and if the Linux® operating system controls the slot, continue with step 9.
-
If the system power is off, complete the following steps:
-
Unlock the drive handle (B) by
pressing the handle release latch (A) in the direction that is shown, and
pulling out the handle toward you. If the handle is not all the way out, the drive cannot slide out
of the system.

-
Select the drive that you
want to remove on the console, and then press Enter.
Important:
- When you press Enter, after your selected time delay, the service indicator light turns on (solid) for 18 seconds. You then have 18 seconds to unlock and remove the drive. You can set an appropriate time delay of 01 - 19 minutes to allow adequate time to access the disk drive or solid-state drive.
- If the service indicator light was already turned on due to a failed device, you will not see a change in the service indicator light until after the first 18 seconds. You need to wait until the service indicator light goes off and then turns back on (solid). You have two cycles of the light that turns on (solid) to unlock and remove the drive.
