Modifying physical tape devices by using the Integrated Virtualization Manager

You can use the Integrated Virtualization Manager to view and to modify the partition assignments for physical tape devices on the managed system.

You can add physical tape devices to, or remove physical tape devices from, any partition, whether or not the logical partition is active. If you remove a physical tape device from an active partition, the Integrated Virtualization Manager prompts you to confirm the removal before removing the device.

To modify physical tape devices, the Integrated Virtualization Manager must be at version 2.1 or later. To update the Integrated Virtualization Manager, see Viewing and updating the code level of the Integrated Virtualization Manager management partition.

To view and modify the partition assignments for physical tape devices, complete the following steps in the Integrated Virtualization Manager:

  1. In the navigation area, select View/Modify Virtual Storage under Virtual Storage Management. The View/Modify Virtual Storage panel is displayed.
  2. Select the Optical / Tape tab.
  3. Select Physical Tape Devices to view a list of physical tape devices available on the managed system. A notation of 'No devices' appears next to this title if no physical devices exist on the managed system.
  4. To change the partition assignment for a physical tape device, complete the following steps: You cannot assign a physical tape device to an IBM® i logical partition.
    1. From the Physical Tape Devices table, select the tape device that you want to modify.
    2. From the tasks menu, click Modify partition assignment. The Modify Physical Tape Device Partition Assignment page is displayed.
    3. Either change the partition to which the tape device is assigned, or set the tape device so it is not assigned to any partition, and then click OK. The list of tape devices reflects the changes you made.
