Modifying optical devices by using the Integrated Virtualization Manager

You can use the Integrated Virtualization Manager to view and to modify physical optical devices and virtual optical media.

You can add optical devices to, or remove optical devices from, any partition, whether or not the partition is active. If you remove an optical device from an active logical partition, the Integrated Virtualization Manager prompts you to confirm the removal before removing the optical device.

To modify virtual optical media, the Integrated Virtualization Manager must be at version 1.5 or later. To update the Integrated Virtualization Manager, see Viewing and updating the code level of the Integrated Virtualization Manager management partition.

To view and modify optical devices, complete the following steps in the Integrated Virtualization Manager:

  1. In the navigation area, select View/Modify Virtual Storage under Virtual Storage Management. The View/Modify Virtual Storage page is displayed.
  2. Select the Optical/Tape tab.
  3. Select the type of optical devices that you want manage by clicking either Physical Optical Devices or Virtual Optical Media.
  4. To change the logical partition assignment for a physical optical device, complete the following steps: You cannot assign a physical optical device to an IBM® i logical partition. An IBM i logical partition must use virtual optical devices instead.
    1. From the Physical Optical Devices table, select the optical device that you want to modify.
    2. From the tasks menu, click Modify partition assignment. The Modify Optical Device Partition Assignment page is displayed.
    3. Either change the partition to which the optical device is assigned, or set the optical device so it is not assigned to any partition, and then click OK. The list of optical devices reflects the changes you made.
  5. To modify virtual optical media, click one of the following tasks in the Virtual Optical Media section:
    • Extend Library to extend the size of the media library.
    • Delete Library to delete the media library and the files within the library.
    • *Add Media to add an optical media file to the media library and make it available for assignment to a partition. If you plan to upload the IBM i installation media to the management partition, you must use the mkvopt command instead of the Integrated Virtualization Manager. For details, see Limitations and restrictions for IBM i client partitions on systems managed by the Integrated Virtualization Manager.
    • Modify partition assignment to change the partition assignment for a media file by changing the virtual optical device to which a media file is assigned. You can assign read-only media to more than one device.
    • Download to open or download the selected media file.
    • Delete to delete the selected media files from the media library.
