Specifying a new name for a virtual target device to use on a destination management partition

Before you move a logical partition, you can specify a new name for a virtual target device, if needed. After you move the logical partition, the virtual target device assumes the new name on the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) partition on the destination system.

Before you start, verify that the management partitions are at version 2.1.2.0, or later. This requirement applies to both the source management partition and the destination management partition.

Where possible, partition mobility preserves user-defined names of the virtual target devices on the destination system. Partition mobility does not preserve vtscsix IDs.

In some situations, partition mobility might not be able to preserve a user-defined name. For example, when the name is already in use on the destination VIOS partition.

If you want to maintain user-defined names on the destination VIOS partition, you can specify a new name for the virtual target device to use on the destination VIOS partition. If you do not specify a new name, partition mobility automatically assigns the next available vtscsix name to the virtual target device on the destination VIOS partition.

  1. To view the names and mappings of the virtual target devices, run the lsmap command as follows. Run the command from the command-line interface on the source VIOS partition:
    lsmap -all
The output might look like the following output:
    SVSA Physloc Client Partition ID
    --------------- -------------------------------------------- ------------------
    vhost4 U8203.E4A.10D4431-V8-C14 0x0000000d

    VTD client3_hd0
    Status Available
    LUN 0x8100000000000000
    Backing device hdisk5
    Physloc U789C.001.DQ1234#-P1-C1-T1-W500507630508C075-L4002402300000000

    VTD client3_hd1
    Status Available
    LUN 0x8200000000000000
    Backing device hdisk6
    Physloc U789C.001.DQ1234#-P1-C1-T1-W500507630508C075-L4002402400000000
In this example, the user-defined names of the virtual target devices are client3_hd0 and client3_hd1.
  2. To specify a user-defined name for a virtual target device to use on the destination VIOS partition, run the chdev command as follows. Run the command from the command-line interface on the source VIOS partition:
    chdev -dev dev_id -attr mig_name=partition_mobility_id
    where:
    • dev_id is the user-defined name of the virtual target device on the source VIOS partition.
    • partition_mobility_id is the user-defined name that you want the virtual target device to have on the destination VIOS partition.
