Installing GX adapters in the 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D with the power turned off

Learn how to install GX adapters in the 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D system with the power turned off.

If you are servicing a failing part, see the service procedures for Removing GX adapters from the 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D with the power turned off and Replacing GX adapters in the 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D with the power turned off. This procedure is intended for installing a new adapter.

Note: Installing this feature is a customer task. You can complete this task yourself, or contact a service provider to complete the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service provider for this service.
Before installing or replacing a feature, ensure that the software required to support the feature is installed on your system. For information about software prerequisites, see IBM Prerequisite. If the required software is not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before continuing: If your system is managed by the HMC, use the HMC to install an adapter in the server. For instructions, see Installing a part by using the Hardware Management Console.

If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the following steps to install the adapter:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
Note: Do not disconnect the power cords at this time.
  2. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.
  3. Place the system in the service position. For instructions, see Placing a 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system in the service position.
  4. Remove the service access cover. For instructions, see Removing the service access cover from the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D.
  5. Locate the appropriate slot in which to install the GX adapter depending on whether you are installing feature code (FC) EJ0G or FC EJ0H. See Figure 1.
Note: The 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D supports two GX++ slots, one from each processor chip module unit. The GX++ adapter slots follow:
    • GX adapter slot 1 : P1-C1 (P1-T7, P1-T8)
    • GX adapter slot 2 : P1-C8 (This is the same physical location as PCI Express (PCIe) slot P1-C7)
The GX adapters supported for the 8231-E2C or 8231-E2D are:
    • FC EJ0G (2-Port 12X IB2 Adapter with 2-Port SPCN CD)
    • FC EJ0H (GX++ LP 1-port PCIe2 x8 Adapter)
Figure 1. GX adapter slots and location codes
Graphic showing GX adapter slots and location codes
FC EJ0G consists of the following features:
    • A double-wide GX card that is mounted in GX slot P1-C8, and occupies PCIe slots P1-C6 and P1-C7.
    • A system power control network (SPCN) cable that is mounted in GX slot P1-C1 and plugs into the system backplane.
  6. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords.
Note: This system is equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this procedure, ensure that the power source to the system has been disconnected.

  7. Attach the wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  8. Remove the card filler by pushing the filler out from the adapter slot.
  9. Prepare to install the new adapter by pulling out the latches (A) on the adapter into the open position. Figure 2 shows installing the FC EJ0G GX adapter in the system and Figure 3 shows installing the FC EJ0H in the system.
    Notes:
    • The GX++ adapter FC EJ0G (2-Port 12X IB2 Adapter with 2-Port SPCN CD) (B) is installed in GX slot 2 and the FC EJ0G 2-port SPCN cable assembly (C) is installed in GX slot 1.
    • The GX++ adapter FC EJ0H (GX++ LP 1-port PCIe2 x8 Adapter) (B), is a single port adapter and can be installed in either GX slot 1 or slot 2.

  10. Carefully grasp the new adapter (FC EJ0G or FC EJ0H) assembly (B) by its plastic latches (A), and align the adapter assembly with GX slot 2 for the FC EJ0G, or GX slot 1 or slot 2 for the FC EJ0H.
  11. Slowly slide the adapter along the guides until it stops.
Attention: When you install an adapter into the system, ensure that it is completely and correctly seated in its connector.
  12. Evenly rotate the latches (A) into the locked position, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.
  13. Complete the following steps to install the FC EJ0G 2-port SPCN cable assembly:
    1. Carefully grasp the FC EJ0G 2-port SPCN cable assembly (C) shown in Figure 2 by the top of the tailstock bracket, and align it with GX slot 1 (P1-C1) opening in the rear of the chassis.
    2. Slowly slide the SPCN cable assembly along the guides until it stops.
    3. Plug the other end of the cable into the connector on the system backplane, as shown in Figure 4.
Figure 4. Installing the SPCN cable assembly
Graphic showing installing the SPCN cable assembly
  14. Replace the service access cover. For instructions, see Installing the service access cover in the 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D.
  15. Place the system in the operating position. For instructions, see Placing a 8231-E2B, 8231-E1C, 8231-E1D, 8231-E2C, 8231-E2D, or 8268-E1D system in the operating position.
  16. If the cable retention bracket (A), shown in Figure 5 is provided, complete the following steps:
    1. Tilt the cable retention bracket (A) to hook the tab at the bottom of the bracket into the slot in the assembly.
    2. Swing the cable retention bracket toward the chassis and push the bracket fastener (B) into the chassis opening to secure the bracket.
  17. From the rear of the system, attach the adapter cables (C).
Note: If you are working on a rack-mounted system unit, ensure that the system cables are routed through the cable-management arm correctly.

Graphic showing installing the cable retention bracket
  18. If you are installing the adapter as part of another procedure, return to that procedure now. If your service actions are complete, continue with the following steps:
    1. Reconnect the power source.
    2. Close the rear rack door.
    3. Start the system. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
    4. Verify the installed part:
      • If you replaced the part because of a service action, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying a repair.
      • If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
