Connecting the SAS adapter to the 5887 disk drive enclosure

Learn how to connect the 5887 disk drive enclosure.

Complete the following steps to connect the 5887 disk drive enclosure to one or more Serial-attached SCSI (SAS) adapters, to a system with support for a SAS disk drawer, or to a PCIe storage enclosure with support for a SAS disk drawer.

For additional information related to SAS cabling and cabling configurations, see Serial-attached SCSI cable planning.

  1. If the system is powered on, you must do one of the following actions, depending on the supported functions of your operating system:
    • Unconfigure the adapters to which you are connecting the 5887 disk drive enclosure.
    • Power off the adapters to which you are connecting the 5887 disk drive enclosure.
    • Power off the logical partitions or systems that own the adapters to which you are connecting the 5887 disk drive enclosure.
To do one of these required actions, choose one of the following options.
Important: If you are connecting to two SAS adapters or to the two internal RAID controllers of a PCIe storage enclosure, both of the SAS adapters or RAID controllers must be powered off or unconfigured.
    • Power off the system or the logical partitions that own the adapters or PCIe storage enclosures by completing the steps in Stopping a system or logical partition.
Note: Use this option if one of the following conditions apply:
      • Your system model does not support slot power control.
      • Your adapters are not located in an I/O enclosure that supports slot power control.
      • You are unable to tolerate a temporary loss of access to other disk devices that might already exist on the same adapters.
    • For all other situations, choose one of the following options:
      • If you are connecting to SAS adapters, complete the following steps:
        1. Unconfigure the two SAS adapters.
        2. Connect the SAS cables from the 5887 disk drive enclosure to the SAS adapters.
        3. Reconfigure the SAS adapters.
      • If you are connecting to a PCIe storage enclosure, complete the following steps:
        1. Unconfigure the two internal RAID controllers in the PCIe storage enclosure.
        2. Connect the SAS cables from the the 5887 disk drive enclosure to the PCIe storage enclosure.
        3. Reconfigure the internal RAID controllers in the PCIe storage enclosure.
      • If you are unable to use any of the previous options, choose one of the following options:
        • If you are connecting to SAS adapters, complete the following steps:
          1. Power off the two SAS adapters.
          2. Connect the SAS cables from the 5887 disk drive enclosure to the SAS adapters.
          3. Power on the SAS adapters.
          4. Configure the SAS adapters and devices.
        • If you are connecting to a PCIe storage enclosure, complete the following steps:
          1. Power off the two internal RAID controllers in the PCIe storage enclosure.
          2. Connect the SAS cables from the 5887 disk drive enclosure to the PCIe storage enclosure.
          3. Power on the internal RAID controllers in the PCIe storage enclosure.
          4. Configure the internal RAID controllers in the PCIe storage enclosure and devices.
  2. Confirm the factory-set mode of the 5887 disk drive enclosure by using information printed on stickers at the rear of the enclosure. Stickers are attached to the lower-left shelf of the chassis (A) and the center support between the enclosure services manager (ESM) modules (B). The stickers indicate whether the enclosure is set to mode 1, mode 2, or mode 4, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1. Mode sticker locations at the rear of the 5887 disk drive enclosure
Mode sticker locations at the rear of the 5887 disk drive enclosure
  3. Confirm that all adapters that you need to connect to the 5887 disk drive enclosure have been installed in the system. If the adapters have not been installed, complete the adapter installation procedure for your system before continuing with this task.
  4. If the server requires an internal cable to be installed to produce an external SAS port for connection with the 5887 disk drive enclosure, confirm that the installation has been performed. Review the following list of systems that require the installation of an external SAS port, and then complete the action for your system, if required:
Remember: When installing or confirming the use of an external SAS port, record the location of the external SAS port on the server. Later in this procedure, you are instructed to install the external SAS cable to this server connector location.
  5. Confirm the configuration that you will use to cable the SAS adapter to the 5887 disk drive enclosure as follows:
    • See the common SAS adapter configurations that are listed in step 7 to determine if one of them applies to your requirements.
    • To learn about other specific SAS adapter configurations for the 5887 disk drive enclosure, see SAS cabling for the 5887 drawer.
  6. Locate the connection for each adapter for which you are using an external SAS cable to connect the 5887.Adapter cables attach to ports at the rear of the servers in which the adapters are installed. To identify the SAS port location for the server in your configuration, see Server connectors.
Note: The configuration figures in step 7 use adapter cards to represent the external server connections. The adapter card can represent one of the following connection types:
    • The external port of an adapter that you confirmed in step 3.
    • The external port of an internal adapter cable that you confirmed in step 4.
  7. Choose one of the following options to cable the SAS adapter.
Note: Adapters are cabled to the 5887 by using ports at the rear of the enclosure. To learn about the enclosure ports that are used in the following options, see Enclosure connectors.
