Data archiving

When an SAP system goes into production, its database has usually a size that allows for efficient storage of data on local hard disks of the database server. During production, the database usually grows continually and can easily reach rates of 30 to 50 percent per year, a figure that often affects the system performance and administration effort within one to two years of usage. With Content Collector for SAP, you can archive mass data that is not actively used during regular system operation.

The rapid database growth has the following negative effects:
  • Because the physical tables are stored on hard disks that are directly attached to the database server, an increase in hard disk requirements is inevitable.
  • The effort that is required by increased database administration and maintenance becomes unacceptable.
  • The increased number of rows per database table delays basic operations, such as running queries against these tables. The accumulation of such delays decreases the response times when you try to access the database.
The archiving process that Content Collector for SAP offers has the following advantages:
  • The data can be moved to storage media outside the immediate operation of SAP.
  • Archived data is compressed and takes up less space.
  • Archived data is accessible by SAP at any time.
  • Archived data is not affected by hardware or release changes of the SAP system.
