Creating partition profiles for dual VIOS

You can use the Hardware Management Console (HMC) to create partition profiles for dual Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) partitions.

The HMC Classic interface is not supported in Hardware Management Console (HMC) Version 8.7.0, or later. The functions that were previously available in the HMC Classic interface are now available in the HMC Enhanced+ interface.

For more information about Logical Host Ethernet adapter (LHEA) settings when the HMC is at version 8.7.0, or later, see Logical host Ethernet adapter (LHEA) settings.

You can create partition profiles for dual VIOS partitions by using the HMC.

  1. To update the profile of the first VIOS partition and to add the virtual Ethernet adapter, which is used as the control channel:
    1. In the navigation pane, expand Systems Management > Servers.
    2. In the work pane, select the client logical partition.
    3. From the Tasks menu, click Dynamic Logical Partitioning > Virtual Adapters. The Virtual Adapters window is displayed.
    4. Click Actions > Create > Ethernet Adapter. The Create Virtual Ethernet Adapter window is displayed.
    5. Enter the required information in the Create Virtual Ethernet Adapter window and click OK.
    6. Click OK to dynamically add the virtual Ethernet adapter.
    7. Select Configuration > Save Current Configuration.
  2. Make the following changes to the second VIOS partition:
    1. Ensure that the priority of the virtual Ethernet adapters that are used for bridging is different from the first VIOS partition. By default, the first VIOS partition is created with a priority of 1.
    2. For both VIOS partitions, ensure that the virtual Ethernet adapters that are used to bridge the Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) are created by using the same port VLAN ID (PVID) and the same VLAN ID. This task ensures that all VLANs are bridged when the backup VIOS is operational.
    3. For both VIOS partitions, ensure that the virtual Ethernet adapters that are used as the control channel are created by using the same port virtual local area network (VLAN) ID. This task enables communication between VIOS partitions.
    4. For the second VIOS, ensure that the virtual Small Computer Serial Interface (SCSI) adapter is created with a different client adapter ID than the first VIOS.
The VIOS partitions are displayed in your system server listing. The VIOS partition profiles are ready to use for the installation process.
