Overview of resource planning
The resource plan defines how cluster resources are allocated among consumers. The plan takes into account the differences between consumers and their needs, resource properties, and various other policies concerning consumer rank and the allocation of resources. IBM® Spectrum Symphony supports two types of resource scheduling plans: slot-based and multidimensional scheduling.
Owning and borrowing resources
Resources are allocated to a consumer through ownership, borrowing, or sharing. A consumer can use one or a combination of these methods to secure resources.
Resource reclaim
Resource reclaim, which is part of IBM Spectrum Symphony's borrowing, lending, and sharing capabilities, ensures that consumers can take back their deserved shared or lent resources as needed to meet workload demand. It is applicable to all supported platforms for IBM Spectrum Symphony; it does not apply to IBM Spectrum Symphony Developer Edition, which does not have resource lending, borrowing, and reclaiming.
Resource sharing
Resource sharing refers to the temporary allocation of unowned resources from a share pool to a consumer with an unsatisfied demand. You can configure resource sharing for your consumers by setting the share ratio, which specifies the ratio of resources to be allocated from the share pool.
Slot-based scheduling
The slot-based scheduling policy allows you to work with one resource group per resource plan.
Multidimensional scheduling
The multidimensional scheduling policy increases resource utilization by enabling more granular resource allocations for applications with varying resource requirements. It can accommodate multidimensional resource allocations, where each allocation can request different amounts of physical resource types including but not limited to CPU, memory, and number of disks.
