Linking artifacts to requirements by using the drag-and-drop method

You can link model elements from IBM® Rhapsody® Model Manager(RMM) with other artifacts across Engineering Lifecycle Management applications by using the drag-and-drop method. When you link the artifacts, OSLC links are created between the artifacts in the applications.

Before you begin

  • To create links between model elements and artifacts from other applications, you must first set up an association between the project area.
  • You can create links between model elements and artifacts from other applications with and without configuring a global configuration context. However, if you enabled the global configuration, ensure that the source and the target applications are in the same global configuration context.

About this task

You can use this method to link requirement artifacts to work items in IBM Engineering Workflow Management (Engineering Workflow Management) or test artifacts in IBM Engineering Test Management (Engineering Test Management) or artifacts editor in IBM DOORS® Next (DOORS Next).
Note: You cannot link artifacts between different global configurations. Therefore, ensure that the Global Configuration (GC) stream for a server from which you want to drag artifacts and a server to which you want to drop artifacts is the same. If you select a different GC stream for both servers, you cannot drop artifacts and create a link to another artifact.
Attention: You can only drag model elements. It is not possible to drag components or folders from Explorer.

Procedure

  1. Open an RMM project area from which you want to drag model elements to a work item artifact or requirement artifact or test case of other applications.
  2. Go to Designs > Explorer.
  3. In Explorer, click a checkbox next to artifacts that you want to select and then use the handle next to checkbox to drag the artifacts to another tab or window.
Note: When you drag model elements from RMM to other applications, the model elements that you selected for the drag operation is not retained.
  4. Drop the artifacts into the Drop artifacts window within the target artifact editor.
  5. In the Select the link type list, select the link type that you want.
Note: The link type that you selected is stored in the cache of your browser. When you drop artifacts next time, the link type that is selected in the previous operation is populated as the link type. When you clear the cache of your browser, the link type history also gets cleared.
  6. Click Create Links. In the Links section, you can view the linked artifact and the link type.
  7. Optional: To link a single model element to a requirement, open the model element in the Properties editor. Click and drag the selected model element icon from the Properties editor to another tab or window of another application. Drop the model element into the Drop artifacts window within the requirement editor. Specify the link type and save the requirement.

Linking artifacts from other applications by using drag and drop method

About this task

You can link artifacts from other application to IBM Rhapsody Model Manager model elements by using the drag and drop method. A drop function is supported in the Properties editor only.

Procedure

  1. Open a work item artifact or requirement artifact or test case artifact list in their respective application.
  2. Select artifacts that you want to drag to an RMM model element.
  3. Open the model element in the Properties editor.
  4. Drop the artifacts into the Drop artifacts window within the Properties editor.
  5. In the Select the link type list, select the link type that you want.
Note: The link type that you selected is stored in the cache of your browser. When you drop artifacts next time, the link type that was selected in the previous operation is populated as the link type. When you clear the cache of your browser, the link type selection also gets cleared.
You can select the following link types when dropping artifacts from DOORS Next:
    • Derives From
    • Satisfies
    • Trace
    • Refines
For Engineering Workflow Management, Elaborates is the only link type available.
For Engineering Test Management, Validated By is the only link type available.
  6. Click Create Links. In the Links section, you can view the linked artifact and the link type.
  7. Optional: You can also use the copy and paste method to link model elements to create links into artifacts of other applications by using the following keyboard shortcuts:
    • Press Ctrl+C (Windows and Linux) or Command+C (Mac) to copy model element links.
    • Press Ctrl+Shift+V (Windows and Linux) or Command+Shift+V (Mac) to paste the model elements links into the target artifact.
