Internet Protocol

IBM® Cognos® Series 7 supports two versions of the Internet Protocol: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 uses 32-bit IP addresses and IPv6 uses 128-bit IP addresses. For example:

  • IPv4: 192.168.0.1:80

  • IPv6: [2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:148:57ab]:80

When IBM Cognos Series 7 components communicate between Windows® or UNIX® client and server computers, if both computers support IPv4 and IPv6 (known as dual stack computers), then they will use IPv6. If one or both computers support only IPv4, then they will use IPv4.

All IBM Cognos Series 7 components support both protocols when running on dual stack computers. The only exception is Impromptu Web Reports, which supports only IPv4.

All IPv6 addresses must be within square brackets as shown in the example above. The only exception is the Upfront data store host name and search engine host name, which must have no brackets.

For up-to-date information about IBM Cognos Series 7 support for the Internet Protocol across various operating systems, visit the IBM Cognos Customer Center (http://www.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/customercenter/).

Notes:

  • IBM Cognos Series 7 Administration components do not work on pure IPv6 networks. Attempting to run them on a pure IPv6 network results in error messages such as "The Server is not available" or "Address family not supported".

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services and IBM DB2 OLAP Server 8.1 and 8.2 (on Windows and UNIX) do not support IPv6. In PowerPlay Connect, you must specify an IPv4 address for these types of cubes to create the pointer file (.mdc).
