Traditional data migration solutions
In today’s complex high availability environments, it is imperative that data migration solutions provide continuous data availability. To achieve this migration capability, software and hardware vendors have developed data migration capabilities to move data without disrupting application availability. To provide uninterrupted, transparent data migrations, two generic categories of data migration facilities exist:
- Hardware based facilities, such as SDMS, which provide array-to-array-based migration driven by the actual storage arrays.
- Host-based facilities, such as IBM’s TDMF, which provides volume level migration
driven by the Host systems connected to the storage arrays.
The following diagram outlines the typical data migrations performed using these facilities. Additionally, Host-based facilities also provide the capability to move from smaller to larger capacity volumes.
