Data Virtualization updates can include new features and fixes. Releases are listed in reverse
chronological order so that the latest release is at the beginning of the topic.
You can see a list of the new features for the platform and all of
the services at What's new in IBM Software Hub.
IBM Cloud Pak for Data Version 5.1.2
A new version of Data Virtualization was released in March 2025.
This release includes the following changes:
- New features
This release of
Data Virtualization includes the following features:
- Monitor the health and status of your service by using two new service monitors
-
You can now use Data Virtualization service monitors
to check that your Data Virtualization integration with
IBM® Knowledge Catalog is healthy, and that the last run of
the integrated IBM
Db2 audit logging process is
successful.
- Migrate objects between Data Virtualization instances
-
You can now migrate Data Virtualization objects
between instances that are on the same release version. For example, you might want to export the
data from a version 5.1.2 development environment and import it to a version 5.1.2 production
environment.
Use the IBM Software Hub
export-import utility to import data to and export data from Data Virtualization instances.
You can migrate the following objects:
- Connections and connection details
- Schemas
- Nicknames
- Tables
- Views
- Authorization statements such as GRANTs
- Statistics
- Service instance users
- Service instance groups
- Caches
- Db2 audit policies
- IBM Knowledge Catalog objects:
- Governance artifacts
- Catalogs
- Data protection rules
- Issues fixed in this release
- The following issues were fixed in this release:
-
-
- Managing user access of a virtualized data asset might display an internal error
- Issue: When you navigate to the Virtualized data
page, and then select Manage access from the overflow menu, you might
encounter this error
Error: There is an internal error. Review the logs for more
information.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- Audit service monitor might falsely indicate
warning due to fetching the oldest
entry from ADMIN_TASK_STATUS
- Issue: In the Data Virtualization audit service monitor, the
Severity status might incorrectly display
Warning or not
display anything at all. This issue occurs because the service monitor logic falsely fetches an
outdated entry from ADMIN_TASK_STATUS instead of the latest entry when checking for
the SQLCODE.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- The virtualization status of some objects might cycle from
Started to
Success and then back to Started without completing
- Issue: When you attempt to virtualize objects, the
Virtualization status of some objects in the Virtualized
data page might cycle from
Started to Success and then
back to Started without the process ever completing.
- Resolution: The issue is now fixed.
-
- Some projects might not be available in Data Virtualization for assignment
- Issue: If your Cloud Pak for Data instance contains more than 100 projects,
only 100 of those projects are listed as available in Data Virtualization when you assign virtualized objects.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- Users and user groups do not populate the table when you add collaborators
- Issue: When you attempt to manage user access to a specific data source
in the Data sources page by selecting , the table
remains unpopulated when you search for a user or user group. This issue is due to the existence of
an empty user group in your Data Virtualization instance.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- Preview of tables to be virtualized might not be correct when the table contains a column that
is named id
-
If you try to virtualize a table that contains a column that is named id,
preview shows only the column value of the first row in the table. This issue occurs because the
keyword id is reserved for the user interface that displays the table.
-
In addition, if a table contains a column that is named id and the column
contains identical values in the id column, these rows display only the
values of the first row for each row that has the same value for the id
column.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- Because Db2 is stuck, unable to complete
provisioning a Data Virtualization instance or the
instance is not running correctly
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
-
- Virtualizing large tables might be slow or might fail
- When you virtualize multiple large tables from data sources in COS, you might see error messages
in the Virtualize objects dialog box.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.

IBM Cloud Pak for Data Version 5.1.0
A new version of Data Virtualization was released in December
2024.
This release includes the following changes:
- New feature
-
This release of
Data Virtualization includes the following feature:
- Speed up schema listings and table counts by configuring your source setup
- You can now improve the performance of operations such as listing schemas in the Explore view
and counting tables on the Data sources page. Configure whether the service uses a custom query or
an API method to list schemas and count tables at the source type level or the Connection Identifier
(CID) level.
For more information about changing this configuration, see the
LISTSCHEMAS_MODE and NUMTABSREMOTE_MODE properties in
SETCONFIGPROPERTY properties.
- Issues fixed in this release
- The following issues were fixed in this release:
-
- You cannot apply masking rules with business terms when strict term enforcement is enabled
-
- Issue: After you enable strict term enforcement and publish assets to the default
catalog, the term relationships are preserved, but the assets and column masking details do not
appear under the Related content tab of the business term.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Business terms that are automatically assigned as a result of the publish action in Data Virtualization cannot be used to enforce IBM Knowledge Catalog data protection rules
-
- Issue: When you virtualize an object in Data Virtualization and publish it at the same time, Data Virtualization assigns the business terms from the original
data source to the published data asset. The automatically propagated business terms cannot be used
to enforce IBM Knowledge Catalog data protection rules.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Profiling results can be viewed in projects for ungoverned objects
-
- Issue: To prevent unexpected exposure to value distributions through the profiling
results of a view, all users are denied access to profiling results in Data Virtualization views in all catalogs and projects. However,
if a view is ungoverned (not published or added to a governed catalog), its profiling results can be
viewed by all project collaborators who are authorized to access the catalog asset, even if they are
not authorized to query the view.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Multiple user selection fails when the search bar is used
-
- Issue: You cannot add multiple users or groups in one attempt by using the search bar and
selecting users in the Add users and groups window. After you use the search
bar to find and add users in the Add users and groups window, previously
selected users get unchecked as you search and add more users.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Data Virtualization only
publishes, virtualizes and deletes objects that are displayed on the current page of the web
client
-
- Issue: When you attempt to publish, virtualize and delete objects after selecting them in
bulk using the web client (or when you select 300+ objects to publish or 30+ objects to virtualize
or delete), Data Virtualization only completes the action
for the objects that are displayed on the current page. This issue means that you have to repeat the
action for each page.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- The web client does not display fetch phase warnings with the result set
-
- Issue: When you run a query from the Run SQL page, fetch phase
warning messages for queries with warnings or errors are not displayed as part of the
Result set.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Unable to add a data source from an existing connection
-
- Issue: When you try to add a data source in Data Virtualization by using an existing platform connection,
after you select the radio button beside the platform connection name, and then click
Add, the UI hangs and you cannot complete the process.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
- Leaving the page during a bulk deletion of tables causes errors
-
- Issue: If you delete tables in bulk, for example more than 30 at the same time, don't
leave the page until the deletion is complete.
- Resolution: This issue is now fixed.
