Updating a modified physical data model using IMAM

A modified physical IDA data model can be updated in InfoSphere Information Server (IIS) using IMAM with the same import area and namespace.

About this task

Practitioner role
  • Data architect
  • Data modeler
Tooling
  • InfoSphere Metadata Asset Manager (IMAM)

Procedure

  1. Log in to the InfoSphere Metadata Asset Manager (IMAM) web client.
  2. In the Import tab, from the list of Import Areas, select the import area that corresponds to the initial import of the data models.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Select the Staged Imports tab and click Reimport....
  5. In the Reimport window, define the import parameters.
    1. File location: Select location of modified physical data model. This is typically Metadata interchange server.
However, select Local computer if the modified model is stored locally.
    2. IDA version: Set to current version.
    3. Import LDM assets with DBM: Select.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the Reimport window, enter the requested identity parameters for the database assets.
    1. Select the current model namespace e.g. BFMDW_IDA.
Note: It is important when importing updates or changes to the model, to use the same namespace in order to access the merge functionality for the changes. If a different namespace is created, a new identity populates, which means that merging will not occur even though the model name itself may be the same.
    2. Click Next.
Note: Do not select Create database schema from physical model parameters.
  8. In the Reimport Area window, add a description for this import.
  9. Select an import option.
    • Select Express Import option and click Import.

Messages indicate the results of the import. Further details can be viewed in the Import Area Details.

    • Select Managed Import option and click Import.

This imports the models into the staging area, where you can analyze and preview the assets before it is shared to the metadata repository. It enables a review of the changes that are imported before they are actually applied to the catalog. Auto cleaning invalid identities, creates a file that fixes several kinds of invalid identities during imports.

  10. In the Imported Assets window, select the physical model and click Share to Repository.
Note: this is performed automatically during the express import if no warning messages or error messages display.

Results

The modified physical data model is available in InfoSphere Information Server.
