- A backslash is used as a continuation character when entering
commands from the shell that exceed one line (255 characters). If
the command exceeds one line, use the backslash character \ as the
last nonblank character on the line to be continued, and continue
the command on the next line. Note: When you enter a command from this information that uses the backslash character (\), make sure that you immediately press the Enter key and then continue with the rest of the command. In most cases, the backslash has been positioned for ease of readability.
