Preventing the use of IEHINITT

z/OS DFSMSrmm Implementation and Customization Guide
SC23-6874-00

You no longer need to use IEHINITT, because the DFSMSrmm utility EDGINERS labels tapes and validates mounted volumes. Use EDGINERS to process new volumes, volumes where old and new labels are known to DFSMSrmm, or old volumes that have been degaussed. EDGINERS defines volumes to the DFSMSrmm control data set that have not been defined previously. For existing volumes, EDGINERS updates the volume record to show that volumes have been initialized. See Initializing, erasing, and scanning tape volumes for information about using EDGINERS.

To protect IEHINITT from being used or to limit usage to specific individuals, add RACF program resource profiles and create limited access lists as shown in Figure 1:

Figure 1. Limiting the use of IEHINITT
RDEFINE PROGRAM IEHINITT ADDMEM('SYS1.LINKLIB'//NOPADCHK) UACC(NONE)
PE IEHINITT CLASS(PROGRAM) RESET(STANDARD)

If program control is not active, use the RACF command SETROPTS WHEN(PROGRAM) to activate it. If program control is already active, specify the RACF command SETROPTS WHEN(PROGRAM) REFRESH to activate use of the new profile.
