Using Metro Mirror primary volume during fast replication recovery

The FRRECOV command uses fast replication to recover one or more data sets, a single volume, or a pool of volumes from the managed backup versions. You can use the SMS copy pool field FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed to indicate to DFSMShsm whether a PPRC primary volume is an eligible FlashCopy® target, and whether a preserve mirror operation is required, preferred, or not desired when the target volume is a Metro Mirror primary volume during fast replication recovery. DFSMShsm indicates this option to DFSMSdss for fast replication recovery.

If you did not specify a value in the FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed field in the SMS copy pool definition panel, you can specify the ALLOWPPRCP keyword on the FRRECOV command. Specifying ALLOWPPRCP on the FRRECOV command overrides the currently stored preserve mirror indicator for the copy pool. The ALLOWPPRCP value specified on the FRRECOV command, however, is used only once during the FRRECOV operation and is not stored in the copy pool record. You can use the LIST COPYPOOL(cpname) command prior to recovery to determine the value of the ALLOWPPRCP indicator.

If Preserve Mirror is used in combination with incremental FlashCopy, the use of the PMPREF or PMREQ option needs to be consistent with the existing relationship when recovering from an incremental version. For example, if the existing incremental relationship was established without Preserve Mirror, it cannot recover with the PMREQ option because the remote relationship will not exist and, therefore, an incremental FlashCopy cannot be done at the remote site. Do not change your Preserve Mirror settings between increments.

Note:
  1. If you do not specify ALLOWPPRCP on the FRRECOV command, DFSMShsm uses the currently stored preserve mirror indicator for the copy pool. If no preserve mirror indicator has been set for the copy pool, the default is NO.
  2. ALLOWPPRCP is ignored when recovering from a tape.
  3. When you specify a value in the FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed field, DFSMShsm considers the value's setting when selecting FlashCopy target volumes for FRBACKUP processing during volume pairing. DFSMShsm does not check if the L0 volumes are eligible for FlashCopy to Metro Mirror primary or preserve mirror operation for recovery processing during volume pairing, even if a value is specified in the FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed field in the SMS copy pool definition. If preserve mirror is required during fast replication recovery using FlashCopy, you must ensure that your copy pool environment meets preserve mirror configuration requirements.
  4. A Metro Mirror primary volume is not permitted to be a FlashCopy target volume when:
    • NO is specified in the FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed field
    • the NO option is in effect by default
    • the capability is not supported by the storage controller
  5. When you specify PN or PP in the FRRECOV to PPRC Primary Volumes allowed field in the SMS copy pool definition or with the YES, PRESERVEMIRRORNO, or PRESERVEMIRRORPREFERRED parameter of the ALLOWPPRCP parameter on the FRRECOV command, use SETSYS FASTREPLICATION(DATASETRECOVERY(NONE)) to prevent the source (L0) volume from going into a duplex pending state during the recovery of an individual data set from disk.
