Case 3: Full journal, undamaged CDS

The problem of a full journal with an undamaged CDS occurs because the journal is not large enough or the CDSs are not being backed up often enough. DFSMShsm issues error message ARC0909E when the DFSMShsm journal threshold is met, and continues to issue the error message each time an additional one percent (or more) of the journal is filled. When the journal is full, ARC0909E states: “JOURNAL DATA SET IS ABOUT 100% FULL.” When the journal is 100% full, message ARC0026E is also issued, which states: “JOURNALING DISABLED DUE TO EOV ERROR ON JOURNAL. MIGRATION, BACKUP, DUMP, TAPECOPY, TAPEREPL, RECYCLE, ARECOVER, AUDIT, AND EXPIREBV HELD.”

Once the problem has occurred, take this step:

Consider using a large format data set for the DFSMShsm journal if your installation is not already doing so. A large format data set is a physical sequential data set with the ability to grow beyond 65,535 tracks per volume. Using a larger journal data set can allow more DFSMShsm activity to take place between journal backups and helps to minimize occurrences of journal full conditions.

For information about large format data sets, see z/OS DFSMS Using Data Sets.
