Migration to Google Cloud Platform

Replication Settings for GCP

The REPLICATION SETTINGS page helps define your target environments. And also helps define Replication Servers in the Staging Area of the target infrastructure.

  1. After entering your GCP credentials in the IBM Live Migration Service user console, navigate to the Setup & Info > REPLICATION SETTINGS.

    Replication Settings

  2. Next step is to define the Target infrastructures and region.

Define the Target infrastructures

To define the target infrastructure, select the GCP region which ideally serves as the target to where you want the replicated data consolidated. Set the target from the Live Migration Target dropdown menu.

Replication Settings

After defining your target, you need to define your GCP Zone. Each GCP region has several zone options. Select the applicable zone from the dropdown menu.

Replication Settings

NoteOnly GCP regions and zones allowed by your GCP account will be displayed.
NoteThe first available zone will be chosen by default if no zone is manually selected.
ImportantAfter selecting your target infrastructure and beginning replicating your source machines, you can opt to change the target selection. However, you should take into consideration that your entire project will be completely reset following a change in the target infrastructure. This means that replication process stops. The Agents currently installed on your source machines will be uninstalled. The source machines will be disconnected from the IBM Live Migration Service manager and all replicated data in the Staging area will be deleted. Therefore, it is very important that the target infrastructure is selected and set at the start of the process.

Defining Your Replication Servers

After selecting your target infrastructure and regions, you need to define your Replication Servers.

Replication Settings

Defining the Subnet

On the Replication Servers section, set the subnet of the Staging area under the Choose the subnet where Replication Servers will be launched: From the dropdown list, select the subnet you want to designate as the Staging area for the Replication Servers.

Replication Settings

NoteYou can safely switch between subnets even after replication has commenced. This switch will only pause the replication, minutes at the most, and will not have any long-term effect on the replication process.

The Default subnet is the subnet that is allocated to you by GCP. The other subnets in the dropdown list are subnets automatically allocated by GCP to the region you selected.

Replication Settings

[Optional] Define VPN usage

[Optional] On the Replication Servers section, select whether you would like to use a public or private network for sending the replicated data from the source machines to the Staging area. Check the box to the left of the Use VPN… option to use a private network.

Replication Settings

NoteYou can use this option only if you already have a VPN connection. Selecting this checkbox will not create a new private connection. It is recommended to use this option if you want to:
NoteThe Use VPN… field shows different options based on your setup (captured in the screenshot above, the Cloud InterConnect option is shown).

By default, replicated data is sent from the source infrastructure to the Staging area over a public network, using the public IP of the Staging area.

The transferred data is protected in transit. Before moving data to the Staging area, it is encrypted on the source infrastructure using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) - 256-bit encryption. Once data is delivered to the Staging area, and before the data is written to disks, it is decrypted.

NoteYou can safely switch between a private connection and a public connection by selecting or clearing Use VPN… checkbox, even after replication has begun. This switch will only pause replication for a short while, and will not have any long-term effect on the replication process..

Define the Proxy

Once you have checked Use VPN. option, you need to define the URL and Port of the VPN proxy server.

Enter your VPN proxy URL under Define whether to route communication from the Replication Server via a proxy: field after the https://.
Enter the port in the port field.

Replication Settings

[Optional] Enable Network bandwidth throttling

The Network bandwidth throttling option allows you to regulate network traffic and minimize bandwidth congestion. Enable this option, if you want to control rate of data transfer sent from the source machine to the Staging area over TCP Port 1500. Once enabled, set the data transfer rate in Mbps. Uncheck the Disabled box to enable the option, then move the bar to set your throttling rate.

Saving Your settings :

Once you have set all of your settings , Click the SAVE REPLICATION SETTINGS button at the bottom of the page.

You will now be able to add machines to your project which is described in the next section.
