Take Action commands

A Take Action command enables you to interact directly with your IP resources.

The Take Action feature invokes two types of command handler:
  • A generic command handler that is part of the Tivoli® Management Services platform
  • A command handler that is a specific to IBM® Z OMEGAMON Network Monitor
These two types of Take Action commands are shown in Figure 1.

Two types of Take Action commands

Note: Beginning with IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.3, all automation requests are required to include a security token, resulting in enhanced auditing of Take Action commands. The token validates that the request originated from an authorized source. To aid in a staged upgrade, the KMS_SECURITY_COMPATIBILITY_MODE parameter was introduced. This parameter allows a pre-V6.3.0 component that does not issue tokens to initiate an automation request. If the value of the parameter is set to Y, the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server generates a default security token so that the automation request can still be processed successfully at the monitoring agent endpoint. However, if the value is set to N, the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server does not generate a default security token and the target monitoring agent, if it is running IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.3, rejects the automation request with a security violation. Currently, the OMEGAMON® enhanced 3270 user interface does not issue tokens, so for z/OS® monitoring servers, the value KMS_SECURITY_COMPATIBILITY_MODE is set to Y by default. See the IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON and IBM Tivoli Management Services on z/OS Common Parameter Reference for more information about this parameter.

Generic platform-enabled Take Action commands

The Take Action feature has a text box for entering your own system command, or you can choose from a list of predefined commands. It also has a list of systems on which to effect the command.

You can invoke the Take Action feature from several locations, as shown in Table 1.
Table 1. Invoking a Take Action command

Invoking a Take Action command

Navigator Send a Take Action command to a system associated with the current Navigator item.
Table row, pie chart slice, or bar chart bar Send a Take Action command to a system associated with the selected row or data series.
Take Action view Add a Take Action view to a workspace so you can access the feature from that workspace at any time.
Situation Add a command that is sent to a system or add a message that is sent to the Universal Message Console that executes when the situation becomes true.
Policy OMEGAMON DE only: Add a Take Action or Write message activity to a policy that issues a command to a system or generates a message that displays on the Universal Message Console.

You have the choice to select a predefined command or enter a command yourself. You can also create and save commands so you can select them from the list of defined commands.

Product-specific Take Action commands issued by the IBM Z OMEGAMON Network Monitor command handler

In addition to the generic Take Action capability provided by Tivoi Management Services, IBM Z OMEGAMON Network Monitor provides a product-specific Take Action command handler that enables the product to pass IP commands to z/OS Communication Server and the z/OS console. These commands are issued in context by right-clicking a row in the summary table for the workspace or on a bar graph that uses the same query. The command dialog will be pre-populated with the attributes shown in Table 2 when the product-specific Take Action command is selected from the menu.

You select a product-specific Take Action command by right-clicking on the table row or a bar-graph bar that supports the command and selecting the command name from the pop-up menu shown in Figure 1. This action causes a context-sensitive dialog box (such as this dialog box for the ping command shown in Figure 2) to be displayed:

Figure 2. Sample product-specific Take Action dialog box

Sample product-specific Take Action dialog box

The command dialog is pre-populated with the context-sensitive attribute described in Table 2, along with default parameters for the selected command. The fields in the dialog may be modified before you click OK, which issues the command. If a field is grayed out (inactive), the option either depends on another option associated with the command or is not available in the version of z/OS on which this instance of the monitoring agent is running. The command response is displayed in the command dialog when the command completes.

Commands issued by the IBM Z OMEGAMON Network Monitor command handler and the responses received are logged on an agent-instance basis by the Command Log workspace.
