Managing resource groups

Your monitored environment might have multiple managed resources that can be categorized by their purpose. Such resources often have the same threshold requirements. Use the Resource groups management page to organize managed resources into groups that you can assign thresholds to. You can assign thresholds to resource groups for monitoring the managed resources of the same type that belong to the group.

Setting up and maintaining resource groups

Complete these steps to configure and manage resource groups:

  1. Go to Administer > Monitoring > Resource groups Configure on IBM Cloud Pak console.

    Administration Resource groups hexagonal cell

The Resource groups page opens with a list of the configured resource groups. The tags are the resource types of the managed resources in the group.

  2. Take one of the following actions:

  3. Configure the resource group:

    1. Enter a name that starts with a letter and has up to 63 letters, numbers, and underscores.
    2. Optional: Enter a description of the resource group. The description is useful, especially for other users, to understand the context of the group.
    3. Select Static membership in the Resource membership section.
    4. In the Select tags to form group section, select a resource tag from the Filters list to see the managed resources of that tag.
    5. In the resources list, click the plus (+) next to each managed resource that you want to add to the group. You can also click the plus (+) for Add all to add all resources of that tag to the group. To delete a resource, click the delete icon next to the resource.

    6. As you select resources, a pop-up window shows the managed resources, each resource tag, and a counter records how many resources are in the group. You can zoom in and zoom out the counter window as you need.

    7. Continue to select other resource tags and add managed resources to the group.

    8. When you finish configuring the group, click Create or Save.

Role-based access control (RBAC)

Users with the role of Cluster Administrator or Account Administrator have full access to resource groups. Users with the role of Team administrator, Operator, or Viewer have access to view the resource groups that their team is granted access to.

Team Administrator Yes Yes* Yes* Yes*
Operator No No No Yes*

Note: * means that access is limited to groups that the user's teams are assigned to. For more information about roles, see Managing roles.
