Increasing the size for a data store

Use the console to increase the size of a particular data store that virtual machines are running on. This operation is useful if you want to create a snapshot for a virtual machine on the data store and the snapshot will not fit in a data store of the default size of 1.8 TB.

Before you begin

The size of a data store can be only increased. After you allocate more space on a data store, you cannot reclaim that space until the cloud group that contains the data store is deleted. Before you complete this task, try freeing up space in a data store by deleting existing workloads.

About this task

You must be assigned the Hardware administration role with Full permissions to complete this task.

Procedure

  1. Click Hardware > Storage Devices.
  2. Select the primary Storage Node, which is usually the node with a lower unit number.
  3. Expand the Data Stores section.
  4. Locate the data store that you want to expand.
  5. In the Action column, click the icon to increase the data store size.
Note: You can increase the size of a data store only by 1.8 TB at a time, up to a maximum of 7.8 TB.
  6. Enter the size for the expansion in gigabytes, and then click OK to proceed.
Tip: 1.8 TB in gigabytes is 1843.2 GB.
